Notes - The last gig of the year with the funkUs five, and it was a good one! We had people dancing all night long, and friends and family abounded. We played well and were happy to end the year on such a good note. Here's to looking forward to a spectacular 2002 as the funkUs grows on and steps out into a brave new world. It's time to infect the masses, people, so we'll see you more next year!

Set Three: Owner of the World, Smiley Garcia*, Whatever*, The Mountain Song*, I Got*, I Wanna Be Sedated*, Imagine$.

*U.f.O.'s.
**requested blues.
$Dave only.
Notes - It was a very receptive crowd to the funkUs five this evening, and they seemed to like the blues, so we went with it! It's always a treat to go back to our roots, and always nice to remind ourselves that we can do it. It's our last Kitty's gig of 2001, so we won't be home until next year. See you then!

Thursday, December 27th, 2001 - Scruffy Murphy's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Mellow, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Fever, Wolfman's Brother, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Chicken Strut, Tea in the Sahara, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Turn on Your Lovelight.

*U.f.O.'s.
**Wee Dave from Choke on guitar.
Notes - First time here and the funkUs five was glad to be back in beautiful downtown Orlando. It's a great sounding room, (gotta love those powered Mackie speakers!), and a great vibe was present as we played for many friends and family, as well as many new faces. Pretty good for a Thursday! We even felt the spirit as we let Wee Dave, from the band Choke, play since he's leaving for Ireland. People were happy to find out that we were playing there, and we were happy to do it. More to come!

Saturday, December 22nd, 2001 - The Cricketer's Arms

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Tore Down, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Wolfman's Brother, Mellow*, Love Comes Easy*, Let Love Rule, Smiley Garcia*, Turn on Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.

Set Two: Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Strobe Light*, Sample In a Jar, Friend O'The Devil, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Bouncing Around the Room, When the Circus Comes, Release Me*, I Got*.

Set Three: Owner of the World, Whatever*, Name That Show*, The Mountain Song*, Icarus*, Shannon*, Hope*, Hit the Bricks*, I Wanna Be Sedated.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Gigging at The Cricketer's is kinda like getting used to wearing an old pair of shoes again, and getting used to it we are. We didn't scare everyone outside this time, and though it was a slow night, it was a comfortable one, exemplified by the slew of original songs at the end of the night. We love seeing the old friends, but are especially enjoying the new ones. I notice that the holiday spirit is a little dampened, but we are having a good time regardless. See you next week!

Friday, December 21st, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Mellow*, Chicken Strut, Wolfman's Brother, Let Love Rule, Tea in the Sahara, Smiley Garcia*, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Icarus*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Friend O'The Devil, Sexx Laws, The Leader, Name That Show*, Strobe Light*, When the Circus Comes, Sing a Simple Song>Tube>Hot Tamales Baby>First Tube>Tube.

Set Three: Owner of the World, Chalkdust Torture, Love Comes Easy*, Hit the Bricks*, Shannon*, Release Me*.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The tour continues and The core 4 return as the other funki are at fellow band Soul Cactus' last gig. Sad, but we manage to shine on creating new scenes and memories as we go, like tonight, another fun, music filled funkUs Friday at Kitty's. We may venture to other clubs, but Kitty's will always be our home, and we take with us a piece of this place with us whereever we go. Also, there were many compliments about the tightness of the core 4, but when the funkUs grows, it's all about the fun and the spirit which shines through them mayhem. There are bound to be growing pains, but as always, the funkUs is what's "growing on".

Wednesday, December 19th, 2001 - Dante's
with Well Trained Dog

Set: Strobe Light*, Love Comes Easy*, Name That Show*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Drink Heavily*, Smiley Garcia*, Cold Wind Blows*, Shannon*, The Mountain Song*, I Got*.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Another surprise gig, (this time we were surprised, though!), it was the funkUs five's first excursion to this stage, and we found it to be a great sounding, cool vibed venue. Hinge Magazine was holding a contest for an opportunity to gig in the Virgin Islands and was kind enough to give us a shot at it, so we put a call out to The funki for some screaming support and, of course, we were not let down. Thanks to all The funki who answered the call to arms on such short notice, (and yes, even to Frosty and Reiner who showed up after the place closed). You guys rock! Even Dave's family showed up in droves, (even Mom and Dad! Wow!) We'll let you all know something when we find out. Contest aside, it was great to meet another band on the scene, and I can now tell you that Well Trained Dog are a bunch of cool guys with a great band. Awesome music!

Saturday, December 15th, 2001 - The Cricketer's Arms

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Been Down So Long, Fever, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Chicken Strut, Jim's Choice/I Can See Clearly Now, Wolfman's Brother, Tea in the Sahara, Let Love Rule, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Jim's Choice/Built for Comfort, Smiley Garcia*, Let Love Rule, What Would You Say, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: (warmed-up with "Bring It On Home") Mellow*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Strobe Light*, Smiley Garcia*, Shannon*, You Can't Do That, Name That Show*, Turn on Your Lovelight>Hot Tamales Baby>Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Three: Whatever*, Mr. Spaceman, Love Comes Easy*, When the Circus Comes, I Got*, The Mountain Song*.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - As part of the English/Irish Pub Tour, this gig begins three weeks at The Cricketer's. Thanks to the Orlando Sentinel for the article helping to create a little "Who are these guys?" kind of curiosity, and, of course, the place was filled with old friends, some of whom haven't been seen all year! Even Rob and Will came out to join the party which just goes to show how close knit we all are. It's gonna be a good Christmas...

Friday, December 14th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Chicken Strut, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Jim's Choice/Built for Comfort, Smiley Garcia*, Let Love Rule, What Would You Say, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Mellow*, Strobe Light*, You Can't Do That, Drink Heavily*, Release Me*, The Mountain Song*, Sample In A Jar, I Got*.

Set Three: Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Whatever*, Name That Show*, Sing a Simple Song>Tube>Hot Tamales Baby>First Tube>Tube, Dear Prudence**.

*U.f.O.'s.
**Dave only.
Notes - You gotta love funkUs Friday's. We do! Can't you tell?

Friday, December 7th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Tore Down, Mellow*, Chicken Strut, Let Love Rule, Sample In a Jar, When the Circus Comes$, Bouncing Around the Room, You Enjoy Myself (Part II), Smiley Garcia*, Mr. Spaceman, Turn On Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Strobe Light*, Roll*, Wolfman's Brother, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Cold Wind Blows*, Take a Rest*$$, Drink Heavily*, Owner of the World, Love Comes Easy*#, Little Wing, Whatever*, The Mountain Song*, Shannon*, Blue Christmas, I Can See Clearly Now, I Got*, Imagine##.

*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron changes a string.
$$after an Adam break, first time played with full instrumentation.
#crashed in the middle.
##Dave only.
Notes - Dave's back and the funkUs five return to bring back a little funkUs to the crowd. What crowd? We'll, we chased the reindeers outside, (couldn't take the heat as we blew off some steam), but the regular crowd eventually showed and we got into the swing of the funkUs Friday spirit. More new faces were grooving and bodies were moving as the night was filled with music, (especially since we couldn't seem to get off the stage). It's what funkUs Friday is all about, people. It's still what's "growing on"...

Saturday, December 1st, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Gots To Be Love, Tore Down, Buddy Steel Chuckin', Check Out Her Mama, Cold Shot, She's Into Something, Friend O'The Devil, Blue Christmas, Honey Don't, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Rolling Blues.

Set Two: Mellow*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Get Back, I Ain't Drunk, Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), I Can See Clearly Now, Hot Tamales Baby.

Set Three: Can't Take It With You, You Can't Do That, Caldonia, Nadine, Turn On Your Lovelight>Whitey's on the Move**.

*U.f.O.'s.
**freeform poetry by Jim Mahoney.
Notes - This was a surprise gig! Friends of funkUs step out as Ron, Mojo, Jim, Chris and Super Dave on drums came together for an inpromptu night of blues, (and a little Beatles for George). There was much hugging from the Scottish contingent declaring this to be the best night of blues since Edinburgh. Go figure... It was a blues extraveganza for all!

Friday, November 30th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: set list lost

Set Two: Mellow*, Cold Wind Blows*, Friend O'The Devil, Honey Hush, Let Love Rule, Chevrolet, Hot Tamales Baby.

Set Three: Roll*, Hit the Bricks*, Bring It On Home, Strobe Light*, Shannon*, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), I Got*, Here Comes The Sun**.

*U.f.O.'s.
**for George.
Notes - It was a "catless" funkUs five, (Jim and Chris on board), and another night of good music for all. One of the regulars, (we'll smoke him out later), commented that the band sounds good even without Dave. Hmmm...

Friday, November 23rd, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Move It On Over, Chicken Strut, Wolfman's Brother>You Enjoy Myself (Part II), Roll*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Smiley Garcia*, Tea in the Sahara, Turn On Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Mellow*, Birds of a Feather, The Leader, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, When the Circus Comes, Icarus*, How Blue Can You Get, Strobe Light*, Name That Show*, Unnamed Samba**, Whatever*, Love Comes Easy*, Theme from Shaft Jam>I Got*, I Wanna Be Sedated.

*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O. debut.
Notes - It was another night with the core 4 on another fun-filled funkUs Friday. We started opening things up a bit and tried out some new arrangements of old material and even snuck a new tune in. Being post-Oysterhead for Dave, some said there was a notable change in the jams which doesn't surprise me in the least bit. The band's notepad is always absorbing new information. After all, the funkUs will keep on growing...

Friday, November 16th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's
with The Original Houseshakers

Set: Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Mellow*, Love Comes Easy*, Smiley Garcia*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Name That Show*, Strobe Light*, The Mountain Song*, Whatever*, I Got*, Drink Heavily*.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - An historic evening with the core 4 opening up for the original line-up (almost) of Orlando blues legends, The Houseshakers. It's been 12 years since these cats played together and funkUs was glad to give their brothers a stage to do it on,(and "do it" they did, as if they never left!). It's all in the spirit, you know, after all, if it wasn't for this band, none of us would even be musicians today. They were the cats that started it all back in the day with a blues jam at what is now the Sapphire Supper Club and the tree branches into many ways from there, (bands like Pitch Blue Jam, Soul Cactus, The Fabulous Horny Toads, The Leisure Kings, 4:20 and Skezag and more are all directly related to these guys). We were more than glad to be a part of this special evening and hopefully the lucky crowd that got to see it was too.

Saturday, November 10th, 2001 - The Cricketer's Arms

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Can't Take It With You, Fever, Chicken Strut, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Smiley Garcia*, Tea in the Sahara, Let Love Rule, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Mellow*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Wolfman's Brother, Strobe Light*, Drink Heavily*, When the Circus Comes, Stormy Monday>How Blue Can You Get, Sample in a Jar, Take a Rest**, Friend O'The Devil, Whatever*, Love Comes Easy*, Shannon*, Sing a Simple Song>Tube>Hot Tamales Baby>Voodoo Child (Slight Return)>First Tube>Tube, Sexx Laws.

*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O., Ron and Dave only, (had to play it at Cricketer's).
Notes - It was a triumphant return with the core 4 at our old stomping ground of many years, (I used to live there, people! Ron still does...) We hadn't played there since 5/3/99, but it seemed like old times with Jon behind the bar, The Rooster at the door, and many of our old friends in the room taking control of song choices by the end of this fun evening. Many Jagers were shared, (perhaps too many judging from how my head feels), and the spirit was definitely in the house. It blew my mind to see old friends like Jeff, well-dressed Tommy, Eden, Rachel, Greg, Laurette and Pat there as if we'd all never left. Even Wayne from Liquid Sol and The Average Joe Band was there! Yeah, we used to live here, and for one night, we had it back. Just like old times...

Friday, November 9th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll>Jump 'n' Jivin'>Sweet Home Chicago>Let the Good Times Roll, Chicken Strut, Roll*, Let Love Rule, Smiley Garcia*, Love Comes Easy*, Mr. Spaceman, Bouncing Around the Room, When the Circus Comes, Drink Heavily*, Animal Walk*$, Shadows in the Rain.

Set Two: Mellow*, Strobe Light*, Shannon*, The Mountain Song*, Sexx Laws, Unhousebroken Dog*, Cold Wind Blows*, Friend O'The Devil, Owner of the World.

Set Three: Turn On Your Lovelight, Release Me*, Whatever*, Name That Show*, Hope*, Sample in a Jar, Chalkdust Torture, Can't Take It With You, Waste**.

*U.f.O.'s.
**Dave only, (with a bit of help from Ron).
$Mike walks in with his dog, Sue, for this appropriate song.
Notes - A funkUs six-piece with Chris Raynor on board was in the house for a night full of some of our favorite things, old friends, old guitars and lots good music. Jim and Dave exchanged classic guitars for the evening, (Jim on Dave's "Black Beauty" custom Les Paul, and Dave on the blonde 335), for the "Gibson attack" and old and dear friend Jeff Swanson, after almost 5 years, shows up unnanounced all the way from Denver. Those combined with The funki in full force is just the formula necessary for a good time, people. And not a penny was thrown! How about that, Rob?

Friday, November 2nd, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's
with The Learys

Set One: Name That Show*, Strobe Light*, Mellow*, Love Comes Easy*, Smiley Garcia*, Release Me*, Drink Heavily*, The Mountain Song*, Whatever*, I Got*.

Set Two: Owner of the World, Shannon*, When the Circus Comes, Mr. Spaceman, Unhousebroken Dog*, Sexx Laws, Let Love Rule, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Turn On Your Lovelight>Hot Tamales Baby>First Tube>Tube, I Wanna Be Sedated, Friend O'The Devil, Imagine**.

*U.f.O.'s.
**Dave only.
Notes - Happy 100th gig!! The Learys finally made it to Kitty's to treat us to some classic and original grooviness, and we were definitely digging the spirit! Then the funkUs five took the stage, (welcome back, Jim), and opened with an all original set, pretty well recieved even by the new faces in the crowd. By the second set, the festive atmoshpere had kicked in, and we let loose with some of our favorites. It felt good to celebrate 100 gigs, surrounded by The funki, old and new, (we couldn't have gotten here without them), turning the evening into another "rockin' good time," (as Alex always likes to say). It's what's "growing on", people...

Saturday, October 27th, 2001 - The Artisan Inn, DeLand, FL

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll>Caldonia, Fever, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Look-A-Py-Py, Tea in the Sahara, Smiley Garcia*, Love Comes Easy*, Wolfman's Brother, Let Love Rule, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright.

Set Two: Name That Show*, Crossroads, Mellow*, Chicken Strut, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Sexx Laws, Drink Heavily*, What Would You Say, Strobe Light*, Friend O'The Devil, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Three: Shannon*, Whatever*, The Mountain Song*, Hope*, Take a Rest**, Black Magic Woman Jam, Birds of a Feather, Release Me*, Bouncing Around the Room, I Got*.

*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O., Ron and Dave only, (Mojo string change).
Notes - Wow, who would've thought we had to go all the way to DeLand to find another club with a cool vibe? It made me remember what gigging in Orlando used to be like. We had a blast as we took the core 4 on a little road trip, (and Kudos to Harmonica Pete for making the trip with us). The response seemed to be very positive as we've gained some new fans. Woo hoo! The seed's been planted and now the funkUs will grow. It's infectious, people! Cheers to Chris and Amy, two of our new favorite people, and here's to DeLand. DRINK!

Friday, October 26th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Fever, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Mustang Sally, Tea in the Sahara, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, When the Circus Comes, Wolfman's Brother, What Would You Say.

Set Two: Name That Show*, Roll*, Look-A-Py-Py, Strobe Light*, Owner of the World, Birds of a Feather, Hope*, Sexx Laws, Let Love Rule, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, The Mountain Song*, Shannon*, Drink Heavily*, Release Me*, Imagine**, I Wanna Be Sedated, Unhousebroken Dog*, I Got*, Mellow*.

*U.f.O.'s.
**Steve Mason fills in on the drums for Adam. Where'd Adam go anyway?
Notes - So when we were setting up, there were these 2 little girls, (about 7 to 10 years old), who were spinning all sorts of classic Led Zepplin on the jukebox and singing along. Then, before we were about to start, the table in front asked us to wait for two more songs on the jukebox to play, and we let the girls sing on the mics to "Wonderwall". It had been a weird day, too... We were the core 4 because a funki was down, (speedy recovery, Jim). With spirits dampened, all we could do was play which translated into a power second set. Sometimes you just gotta dig in and play to forget about the things around you. Sometimes the beer just isn't enough. In any case, we managed to have a blast, and The funki, like Cool Ass Steve, were on hand to help us have a great time.

Saturday, October 20th, 2001 - Spatz

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Mary Had a Little Lamb, Look-A-Py-Py, Tea in the Sahara, Let Love Rule, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Smiley Garcia*, Love Comes Easy*, Name That Show*, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Mellow*, Strobe Light*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Chicken Strut, Friend O'The Devil, Drink Heavily*, Shannon*, When the Circus Comes, Unhousebroken Dog*, Whatever*.

Set Three: Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Owner of the World, Sexx Laws, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), The Mountain Song*, Hope*, Release Me*, I Got*, Sing a Simple Song>Tube>Hot Tamales Baby>First Tube>Tube.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Back at Spatz in Winter Park, (last played here 3/13/99), and despite the events against us, (Magnolia Fest plus a bar employee getting married), we had a decent turnout and had a good time just doing what we do. A free show, in spite of the door policy, because free music = free people! And Jerry, the owner, dug it, too. We just have to reach out every now and then to see what happens, so we'll see what happens, eh?

Friday, October 19th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Fever, Wolfman's Brother, Tea in the Sahara, What Would You Say, Jim's Choice/Check Out Her Mama, Chicken Strut, Sample in a Jar, Smiley Garcia*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright.

Set Two: Mellow*, Friend O'The Devil, Shannon*, Love Comes Easy*, Cold Wind Blows*, Unhousebroken Dog*, Strobe Light*, Whatever*, I Got*.

Set Three: Owner of the World, Mr. Spaceman, Look-A-Py-Py, The Mountain Song*, Sing a Simple Song>Tube>Hot Tamales Baby>First Tube>Tube.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs five on another fun for all Friday. Hey, we can keep this up all year... and will!

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Caldonia, Chicken Strut, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Let Love Rule, Smiley Garcia*, Love Comes Easy*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Look-A-Py-Py, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Mellow*, Strobe Light*, Shannon*, Drink Heavily*, The Mountain Song*, Sexx Laws, Crossroads, Sample in a Jar, Unhousebroken Dog**, Friend O'The Devil, Shadows in the Rain.

Set Three: Whatever*, Name That Show*, Hope*, Owner of the World, Run**, Release Me*, I Got*, Imagine$, Dear Prudence$$.

*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O. debuts.
$Dave only.
$$Dave & Ron only.
Notes - Ahh... the core 4 feeling a bit saucy (and drinking a bit of sauce, of course) with two original debuts and an Oysterhead song thrown in for flavor! You gotta dig that! We sure did...

Friday, October 5th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Let Love Rule, Love Comes Easy*, Jim's Choice/Check Out Her Mama, Wolfman's Brother, Mr. Spaceman, Ron's slow blues in G medley*, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Three: Whatever*, Release Me*, Birds of a Feather, Drink Heavily*, Shannon*, The Mountain Song*, I Fought the Law>I Wanna Be Sedated, Imagine**.

*U.f.O.'s.
**Dave only.
Notes - The funkUs five in the house with some new toys and good feelings with which we were able to come together and spread some more love, as we do every Friday. A grand time was had by new faces and old, and we were feelin' it all night long. It's what's growing on, people...

Saturday, September 29th, 2001 -
The DeLand Original Music Festival, downtown DeLand, FL

Set One#, 4:20 PM downtown at the Courthouse: Mellow*, Cold Wind Blows*, Love Comes Easy*, Strobe Light*, Release Me*, The Mountain Song*, I Got*.

Set Two, 12 AM at The Artisan Inn: Chicken Strut, Mellow*, Whatever*, Drink Heavily*, Smiley Garcia*, Name That Show*, Shannon*, The Mountain Song*, Strobe Light*$.

*U.f.O.'s.
#Jim could only make the first set...
$Chris and Bonnie, the two beautiful funki dancers of the evening, jump onstage with the band. You gotta love this place...
Notes - Thanks once again to the Songwriters Showcases of America for organizing this very large downtown festival, featuring over 60 acts on 9 different stages, in beautiful, historic DeLand. (Thanks to Ma and Pa Mojo for the great grub between sets, too! It's good to play close to home!) We had a blast, met some cool bands, (like Jennyanderson who we followed both sets), and some cool people, (like Chris, Amy and Bonnie and some of the regular patrons from The Artisan, as well as the couple with the guy who stopped us in the street and said we were the freakiest band he'd ever seen: "You've got the black guy, the oriental guy, the white guy, the blond guy and the ex-professional wrestler!") This just may be the beginning as the folks at The Artisan Inn responded very well to the flavorful grooves. Can you say "road trip"?

*U.f.O.'s.
**Dave only.
Notes - The core 4 return on another feel good Friday. The music was strong, the crowd was groovin', and the floors stayed clean. (You can't have everything!) Good friends from near and far were on hand and the spirit continued to grow. Dave, feeling the moment, even surprised everyone, including the band, with an appropriate song choice for the times. "Imagine all the people living life in peace..."

Sunday, September 23rd, 2001 -

Songs tracked: Release Me*, Name That Show*, The Mountain Song*, Smiley Garcia*, Hit the Bricks*.

Set Three: Smooth Criminal Jam, Roll*, Friend O'The Devil, Sexx Laws, The Mountain Song*, I Fought the Law>I Wanna Be Sedated, Drink Heavily*, Dear Prudence**.

*U.f.O.'s.
**Dave only.
Notes - The funkUs five yet again! Doing only what we know how to do, we continue to move forward, (despite the fact that the Florida Music Harvest had most of our people there). We must have had some fun, though. Susan, our self-appointed T-shirt model for the evening, had a little too much fun, as Mike, on cleaning duty, can attest to. Ugh! Oh, and we got this on tape, too...

Friday, September 14th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: (soundcheck - Wild Nights), Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Fever, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, How Blue Can You Get, Look-a-Py-Py, Friend O'The Devil, Jim's Choice/Nadine, Turn on Your Lovelight**.

Set Two: You Enjoy Myself (Part II), Love Comes Easy*, Cold Wind Blows*, Mr. Spaceman, Name That Show*, Shannon*, Smiley Garcia*, The Mountain Song*, Whatever*.

Set Three: Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse$, Chalkdust Torture>I Wanna Be Sedated, I Got*, I Wanna Be Sedated Outro, Sleep$$.

*U.f.O.'s.
**extended jam includes Star Spangled Banner.
$Ron and Dave switch vocal parts.
$$Dave only.
Notes - The funkUs five again on what was supposed to be another festive occasion, yet, understandibly, the spirit was a bit dampened by the week's events. The Half Way to St. Paddy's Day party that wasn't, is what we'll remember this one as. Hopefully, we'll be able to shake off the negative vibes, but one can't help but feel the sorrow, no matter what you try to do to move on. We did get this one on tape, but quickly trashed it...

Sunday, September 9th, 2001 -
ARTI Studios, Orlando, FL

Songs mixed: Shannon*, Strobe Light*, Icarus*.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Hey, didn't we just release our debut CD? Well, we're already back in the studio for #2! Keith is at the board again, and we've wrapped up 3 songs, (which makes 5 so far with "Roll" and "Animal Walk" in the bag). We've got enough material for a follow-up so we may actually release a second CD before this year is up. Don't quote me on that, though...

Saturday, September 8th, 2001 -
The CAN's Our Voice Freedom Festival on the streets of Downtown Melbourne, FL

Set: Love Comes Easy*, Warm*$, Strobe Light*, Smiley Garcia*, The Mountain Song*, Name That Show*, Shannon*, Mellow*, Release Me*, Whatever*$$, Turn on Your Lovelight#>Got My Mojo Working.

*U.f.O.'s.
$Covering for a snare drum mike check.
$$The "Bongo Willie" line was replaced with "Steve" for showing up.
#Dave the cat plays a solo with 1-year old son Davey in his arms.
Notes - The core 4 on our first official road gig! And kudos to our great friend Steve for making the trip with us, along with our wives and kids in tow. (It's always nice to have friends and family around when in new environments.) We were glad we could lend a hand to the Florida Cannabis Action Network's grand opening festival celebration of the new Community Action Center and the Hemp Museum. The mood was mellow, and despite Ron showing up at the very last second, (yep, he pulled a Dave), we managed a strong set. Comic and our good friend, Jeff Barrett, was even on hand to give us the proper introduction, (after giving Ron a hard time for being late, of course). It was our first experience getting our feet wet in the festival atmosphere, and it was a blast. It almost felt like home...

Friday, September 7th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: (soundcheck - A Ring in His Nose and A Ring on Her Hand), Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Chicken Strut, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, If You Love Me Like You Say, Friend O'The Devil, Love Comes Easy*, Turn on Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Working.

Set Three: Drink Heavily*, You Enjoy Myself (Part II)>Chalkdust Torture>Boucing Around the Room, Mr. Spaceman, I Got*, I Wanna Be Sedated, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin'.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs five on another groundbreaking evening with live sound at Kitty O'Shea's! We invited an old friend, Todd Lipkin, out to mix the evening and dig the spirit, and it was dug, in spades! Never had we sounded better or felt more free, (best exemplified with another all original set), and the crowd was WAY into the spirit of things, dancing all night long. As Rob put it, "Everyone was just happy!" Many elements combined this evening to make another magical funkUs Friday a success. Dig the flavor, people...

Friday, August 31st, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Been Down So Long, Chicken Strut, Fever, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, How Blue Can You Get, Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Tea in the Sahara, What Would You Say, Wild Thing$, Drink Heavily*.

Set Two: Mellow*, Strobe Light*, Name That Show*, Friend O'The Devil, Sample in a Jar, Animal Walk*, Release Me*, The Mountain Song*, Turn on Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Working.

Set Three: Low Rider, When the Circus Comes, Shannon*, I Wanna Be Sedated, Icarus*, Chalkdust Torture, I Got*, Dear Prudence$$.

*U.f.O.'s.
$I can't believe we played this, can you?
$$Ron and Dave only.
Notes - The core 4 again, though Chris was on board later to lend a hand. More cobwebs, but some lesser known original songs were laid on the table. (I can't explain the sudden appearance of "Wild Thing", but I can blame it on Ron! And I thought I'd never play that song again...) It was a drinking night as Dave had his wife and her brother in town with some British friends, and it was Mojo's first day of freedom, so there were some events of note this evening. Or were those Jagermeisters? Probably both...

Friday, August 24th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Mary Had a Little Lamb$, Little Wing, Hope*, Chicken Strut, Sexx Laws, Friend O'The Devil, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Turn on Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Working.

Set Two: Strobe Light*, Mellow*, Love Comes Easy*, Smiley Garcia*, Drink Heavily*, Release Me*, Shannon*, Hit the Bricks*, Icarus*, Name That Show*, The Mountain Song*, Whatever*, I Got*.

Set Three: Look-a-Py-Py, What Would You Say, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Chalkdust Torture>I Wanna Be Sedated.

*U.f.O.'s.
$a bizarre moment as the jukebox kicks on at the end of this song with Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Notes - The core 4 returns to funkUs Friday. We shook the cobwebs off of some old favorites by request and had an all original set for the appreciative crowd. All I can say is that it's good to be home.

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2001 - Lost & Found
with 6 Star Ego

Set: Cold Wind Blows*, Strobe Light*, Love Comes Easy*, Mellow*, Shannon*, Release Me*, Smiley Garcia*, Drink Heavily*, Hope*, Name That Show*, The Mountain Song*, Whatever*, I Got*, Warm*$, Hit the Bricks*, I Wanna Be Sedated.

*U.f.O.'s.
$Adam's bathroom break.
Notes - The funkUs five go boldly where no funkUs have gone before. Well, we've been here before, but this original music scene we're delving into still seems like untrodden territory as we get deeper and deeper. It's nice to play an all original set to a small but appreciative crowd, and it's always a pleasure to see the lovely Lenore and the great L&F staff, but here's lesson #1: when playing for the door, be very aware of the bar tab. (You'd think we learned something from the Blues Brothers, but noooooooo!) We had fun, though, (maybe too much?). Kudos to the couple, (Nick and Michelle? I had a few drinks...), from Pennsylvania, just passing through long enough to catch a gig. They found our website, showed up WAY early, and stayed long enough to get infected with the funkUs. Troopers! And when was the last time the band bought the beer? It's all about the spirit...

Wednesday, August 15th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Been Down So Long, Chicken Strut, Wolfman's Brother, Chris's Choice Slow Blues/Sweet Little Angel, Smiley Garcia*, Low Rider>Spill the Wine>Low Rider, Friend O'The Devil, Turn on Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Working.

Set Two$: Can't Take It With You, Love Comes Easy*, Cold Wind Blows*, Farmhouse, When the Circus Comes, Mr. Spaceman, If You Love Me Like You Say, Early in the Morning, Cissy Strut>Cardova, Birds of a Feather, Drink Heavily*.

Set Three$: Chemicals*, Caldonia, Animal Walk*, The Mountain Song*, Tube>Hot Tamales Baby>First Tube>Tube, I Wanna Be Sedated.

*U.f.O.'s.
$without Ron, who had to leave because of his newly broken ankle.
Notes - Surprise! It's 4:20's usual night to play, but we pulled of the old switcheroo and played a dirty trick on everybody. (They're gonna cover our usual funkUs Friday this week.) Some were pleasantly surprised, and some grumbled and walked away. In any case, it's great to play in front of a fresh, new crowd, (thanks to Tony Hume for making it happen), and I hope most enjoyed the experience. I did. The real story here is Ron's broken ankle, though. He broke it earlier in the day and stuck it out through the first set like a trooper, but the bass wave therapy wasn't working, so he had to leave. Fortunately, Jim Mahoney, Chris Raynor and Clay Watson were on hand to bring a funkUs six piece with horns together for a night of some original tunes, Phish, Dead, Meters and some blues, (a little Ramones for flavor, of course). You never know when this could happen again...

#Dave M.I.A.
##Dave arrives and straps on just in time for his solo. (Fashionably late?)
*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O. debut... technically because it's the first time played as funkUs.
$The Balloon Wars erupted spontaneously as the crowd started grabbing the balloons and throwing them around. Dave borrowed a cigarette butt from someone, put it in his headstock and started popping them with his guitar as Adam batted the ones he missed while continuing to play.
$$Ron and Dave only.
Notes - The funkUs five were on-hand to celebrate our debut CD, and what a party! Unfortunately, The Learys couldn't show, (Randy!!), and Dave was late, but regardless, we pulled off a strong original set of music and an even stronger second set for the faithful, who arrived later as usual. The love was in the room, (best exemplified by The Balloon Wars), and the spirit was high as the room was thoroughly infected with the funkUs. There were lots of new faces, (including Katrina, the Dancing Queen!), and lots of CDs were sold as the funkUs grows on and on. We had a ton of fun, people. Let's do this again sometime, eh?

Friday, August 10th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

set lists lost

Notes - 'Twas the night before the CD party, and all through the club, not a creature was stirring, no where in the pub... Okay, it wasn't that empty, but it seems as most people decided to wait until Saturday to get their funkUs treated. It was a strange evening regardless. Dave arrived late after having to change a flat tire on the highway in the rain, and Jim got a flat on the way home, riding the rims into his driveway. On top of it all, the set lists were lost, so maybe it's best to let this gig slip quietly away. Hopefully, more exciting tales will be told tomorrow.

*U.f.O.'s.
$played just a few hours after winning The Philips Phile Pick of the Week!
Notes - The core 4 return, loud and proud on funkUs Friday as usual. It seems like forever since we'd seen some of our friends in the room, each having been on journeys of their own, so it was really more of a homecoming than last week. Spirits high, the crew danced all night long and the energy was flowing. To top it all off, we celebrated being chosen "Pick of the Week" by Jim Philips and The Philips Phile on Real Radio 104.1 with many, many Jagermeister shots, (what else?).

$Adam goes away... again.
$$Ron, Dave and some background vocal help from Jim.
#Adam plays with his drum set half broken down. We didn't notice.
Notes - AHHH!! Sweet relief!! Tonight was another welcome return to funkUs Friday with 5 aboard after 3 weeks of vacation. Mojo was sporting a fine European tan direct from the south of France and Dave still had some Tennessee bluegrass kicking around in his head, but we managed to shake off the cobwebs and pull off a tremendous evening. A pity that very few people were there to share, (not back from seeing Trey in Atlanta, I suppose), but the few who were dug it, including some new faces. A nod goes to the family from Ireland who stuck it out to the very end as the little one slept through the concert-like atmosphere. (Reminds me of me...) We were loud and proud to be back and are looking forward to the big party to come.

Notes - This was a fun evening as Jim & Chris were back aboard, and the spirit was high as we celebrated the long-awaited arrival of our CDs with a CD Pre-Release Party. A soft release for the faithful, and just in time because funkUs is taking a break for a while. The next gig will be July 27th. See you then!

Wednesday, June 27th, 2001 - Lost & Found AND Tanqueray's

Set - Lost & Found: Strobe Light*, Name That Show*, Love Comes Easy*, Smiley Garcia*$, The Mountain Song*, Shannon*, I Got*, Whatever*.

Set - Tanqueray's: How Blue Can You Get, Smiley Garcia*, Shannon*, Friend O'The Devil, The Mountain Song*, Hit the Bricks*, Hope*, Turn on Your Lovelight.

*U.f.O.'s.
$Phil Weidner of the SSA joins in on harmonica.
Notes - This is another record breaking evening as funkUs played in two different places in two different cities on the same night. First, we were invited to be a part of the Songwriter's Showcases of America with a set in a new club for us, Lost & Found in Longwood. It was great fun as we brought our unique "flavor" to a new crowd, (with some friends and family in the room, of course). Thanks to Phil and Dana for setting this up, and thanks to the lovely Lenore for being so fuzzy and warm, such a gracious host. Then we were off to Tanqueray's in downtown Orlando to help celebrate their grand re-opening under the new rule of our long-time friends, Dan and Melinda. Congrats, guys! The club couldn't be in better hands. We ended the evening there with an acoustic set, (sans Adam), joined by Jim, Chris and Walt Turner of The Houseshakers/Three Forks Road on percussion and congas. Many old friends were in the house and we had a grand time reminiscing in a club that we all have a lot of history with, and we were all excited about the bright future ahead... or was it the shots? Later, Jim, full of spirit (and shots), got back on the stage after hours and began playing, at which point the rest of the musicians in the house picked up an instrument and played and sung along. There was a feeling of family and a sense of home present, and for once, a sense of hope that downtown will have a home again for the blues.

Friday, June 22nd, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

set lists lost

Notes - Apologies for another night lost to the ages. It was the usual fare with the core 4, a little Phish, a little Meters, some Dead, Ramones for good measure, and lots of original material... also, in tribute to the late Carroll O'Conner, the whole room burst into a sing-a-long with the "All in the Family" Theme Song. "Those were the days..."

$w/o Adam, as he sneaks away again.
$$Dave plays on Jim's blonde 335 and has an increased palate of tones to play with.
Notes - A welcome return to Kitty's, free of equipment failure, and full of original music, (a record 18 U.f.O.'s, including an add-libbed composition and another debut!). It was so crazy that we lost all track of time and didn't finish playing until 2:20 AM, (don't tell Glenda, though). It was a introspective evening for us, as we prepare ourselves for the next level, and with the CD coming out, it won't be long now. There's funkUs growing here...

Friday, June 8th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

$Equipment failure! The PA died, morphing the song into a Bflat jam.
$$Ron, Mojo & Adam only, still no PA.
#Replacement PA functional! Yay!
##"When the Circus Comes" intro tease while Adam sneaks away.
Notes - A very disheartening evening as equipment failure put a damper on what was to be a record setting evening playing as an 8-piece band, including The fU Horns, (Chris, Rob and eventually Clay). Luckily, we had the means to get a working PA in place, (after Dave and Jim drove halfway across town), and the show went on. Apologies to all. It happens...

Friday, June 1st, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/On Broadway, Fever, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Look-A-Py-Py, Friend O'The Devil, Tea in the Sahara, Let Love Rule, Turn on Your Lovelight.

*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O. debut.
$Ron steps off to change a string, making it back before the end.
Notes - The core 4 with a slow start, but soon picked up the pace with some new songs, (some planned, some unplanned including a new original song!), an original set (sprinkled with some Meters, Hendrix and Ramones), and a monster Phish medley to end the evening. Wow! I don't know where that came from, but it was fun as old friends and new faces in the crowd enjoyed the spirit with bubbles and dancing, and even Beatles sing-alongs outside. The only thing missing was a bonfire... but we did have wings!

**Dave forgets lyrics... all of them!
$for Joey...
$$Ron and Dave only.
Notes - Again with the core 4 and a focused energy akin to a magnifying glass over an ant hill. Those fortunate enough to attend were happily baked into an early frenzy resulting in a massive two hour second set. The effort took it's toll, however, and the casulties, though few, were pretty dramatic. Will Rob and Will ever forgive us for the mess? I hope so. (And thanks to the after hours gang and Pete for taking care of me. Another club christened...)

Friday, May 18th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Can't Take It With You, Fever, Built for Comfort, Look-A-Py-Py, Friend O'The Devil, If You Love Me Like You Say, Low Rider, I Ain't Drunk, Turn on Your Lovelight.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - With Dave checking out the Canadian scene, funkUs took on a few members to bring the house down on another great Friday. The fU Horns added a sax player new to us all named Rob, The Osceola Kid, who summed up the evening this great question, "You guys do this every Friday?". Besides Mojo breaking a few strings, we sure do... (He was seen later playing while leaning on the jukebox for "support".)

$for Shannon, who narrowly escaped being wrapped in saran wrap on her birthday.
**a quick Cheech & Chong movie impression by the one and only Grateful Doug, (still phhhffftt Doug to me!).
Notes - The return of the core 4, and along with some new jams, we brought some old favorites back into the mix, and saw some more new faces digging the original music. It's inspiring to hear so many good things from unfamiliar faces, (which will hopefully change as we get to know them). It was THE Shannon's birthday, (who's neat because she's Adam's girlfriend), and we even debutted the rising new comedic talent of our longtime friend, Grateful Doug. Another good time was had by all, despite the attempt to bring some negativity into our house, (we don't need to write about that). It just adds to the "flavor rock", you know... just like the wings do!

$Eric Charles's fourth time as a funki, sitting in for Adam.
*U.f.O.'s.
#vamped in from the jukebox, first time ever played.
Notes - Considering Adam's absense, we were amazingly able to keep our identity with another all original set. I guess that's the cool thing about having a CD, (did I just say CD?), and a guy like Eric around. It was just really loose and enjoyable to groove along to, with friends like Tony Hume from 4:20 and new faces proclaiming we were a "best kept secret". I can dig secrets, but that'll soon change... Just having a good time for all! (Oh, and the wings were kickin'!)

*U.f.O.'s.
$without Ron, changing a string, Dave delivers a stripped down version.
Notes - Stripped to the core 4, we decided to streamline the music again to the core 4 bands on which funkUs was created, so all of the songs above are from one of these bands: funkUs, Phish, The Grateful Dead, The Meters, (excluding some snipets of other material for added "flavor"). This was part of our move towards becoming the all original line-up we hope to be, and we were happy to find the crowd, largely new faces, receptive. With more original material in the works, and more funki yet to be introduced, plus the upcoming release of the CD, (I've said it before), the funkUs continues to grow. Stay "tuned"...

Set Two: Roll*, Whatever*, Animal Walk*, Cold Wind Blows*, Strobe Light*, Hit the Bricks*, Release Me*, Shannon*, I Got*.

*U.f.O.'s.
**Surprised everyone with this, including Ron.
Notes - A happy 4/20 was had by all as the funkUs grew to a record 7-piece band, (the funkUs five with a partial introduction of The fU Horns, Chris "The Iceman" Raynor and Clay Watson). Also, a record 17 original songs were performed, (including an all original set), marking a true peak in our development. It was a remarkable evening for all treating the crowd with funkUs, Phish, The Grateful Dead, The Meters, (with a little blues, rock, punk and reggae for good measure), topped off with a surprise request for "Tube", (to which the crowd went mad over), taking us well into the morning just before closing. And let's not forget the introduction of the "Midnight Munchies", now officially a funkUs Friday tradition! The spirit of this unofficial official national holiday flowed heavily among us, and man, did it feel good. A huge thanks for the great party to Rob and the crew!

Friday, April 13th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Fever, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Ain't No Sunshine, Stray Cat Strut, Look-A-Py-Py, How Blue Can You Get, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Mellow*, Love Comes Easy*, Cold Wind Blows*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, The Mountain Song*$, Sing A Simple Song>Tube>Hot Tamales Baby>First Tube>Tube.

Set Three: Roll*>Strobe Light*, When the Circus Comes, Release Me*, Hit the Bricks*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Whatever*, I Got*.

*U.f.O.'s.
$Dave omits a verse, AGAIN!
Notes - The funkUs five started this night off with a "laid back twang set". Nothing really to note. We played well, I suppose. I think we're just glad to have survived another Friday the 13th! (Insert scary music here) ...

Friday, April 6th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Ain't No Sunshine, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Born Under a Bad Sign, Friend O'The Devil, You Got Me Runnin', Stir It Up, Little Wing, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing Jam>Cardova, Love Comes Easy*$, Tupolo Honey, Hit the Bricks*, Release Me*, Roll*>Strobe Light*, Sample In a Jar, The Mountain Song*, Look-A-Py-Py, Bouncing Around the Room, Whatever*, Icarus*, Shannon*, I Got*, Sleep**.

*U.f.O.'s.
$Dave omits a verse.
**Dave solo, takes a moment in the middle of the song to remember how to play it.
Notes - The night began as an unprecidented funkUs three piece, but Dave joined the stage to complete the core 4 for a record 19 song second set. Having just flown in from Seattle, Dave stepped off of the plane onto the stage in true rock star fashion, (that's how the big boys do it, right?). Practice makes perfect...

Saturday, March 24th, 2001 -
ARTI Studios, Orlando, FL

Songs mixed: Cold Wind Blows*, Whatever*, Love Comes Easy*, I Got*, Mellow*.

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Another marathon weekend of mixing, and many, many, many thanks to Keith's magic ears and fingers, (and, of course, Steve Pietrofesa who made it all possible), I think we got the debut CD in the can! Shhh... Don't tell anyone, yet. Watch for the CD release party to be announced soon...

Friday, March 23rd, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Early in the Morning, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Wolfman's Brother, Born Under a Bad Sign, Look-A-Py-Py, Drink That Bottle Down, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Mellow*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse**, Cold Wind Blows*$, Friend O'The Devil, Love Comes Easy*, The Mountain Song*, Strobe Light*, Release Me*, Hit the Bricks*, Shannon*, Drink Heavily Jam*$$, Whatever*.

Set Three: When the Circus Comes, Sample In a Jar, Hope*, I Got*, Icarus*.

*U.f.O.'s.
**dedicated to Dave's baby sister, Selena.
$w/o Ron, changing a string.
$$U.f.O. still in development.
Notes - Another fun-filled evening of friends and family, (all the way from Germany, France, Canada and... uh, Orlando...). As the funkUs five, (as we'll call it now that Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney has been consistantly gracing the stage with his mad guitar, taking his place among the funki), the crowd was treated to another original set, again recorded for posterity. The new material continues to get a strong response as the funkUs continues to grow, and for those who don't understand the meaning of "flavor rock", just take a look around at those enjoying the sounds. Don't judge, just know that there's something in the air, and you can choose to let it all hang out, if you dare.

Saturday, March 17th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's
St. Patrick's Day

Set One: Everyone was late because of crazy St. Patty Day traffic. This set opens with Ron solo, midway through joined by Dave, then Mojo and Adam fall in and funkUs plays Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright.

Set Two: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Look-A-Py-Py, Friend O'The Devil, Mary Had a Little Lamb, The Thrill is Gone, Love Comes Easy*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Mustang Sally, Little Wing>Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Shannon*, What Would You Say, Turn on Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.

Set Three: Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing Jam>Cardova, Release Me*, When the Circus Comes, Wolfman's Brother, Chicken Strut, Strobe Light*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, I Got*, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.

Set Four: Mellow*, Smiley Garcia*, Icarus*, Birds of a Feather**, The Mountain Song*, Hope*, Sing A Simple Song>Tube>Hot Tamales Baby>First Tube>Tube, Whatever*.

*U.f.O.'s.
**We were begged to play this one.
Notes - St. Patty's Day! Celebrities in the house, beer, a broken jukebox, beer, lots of corned beef, GREEN beer... Only at an Irish Pub... The place was kickin' early on, and with the jukebox on the fritz, the core 4 complied with a full night of music showing the full range of funkUs from solo act to duo to band. (The scary part is that it doesn't stop there as the band ranges from 4 members to 6 to a possible 10!). Fortunately, the fates shined upon us as the jukebox magically fixed itself, and we didn't have to play the boom box through the mic anymore for breaks! 4 full sets of music on a night full of drunken holiday partiers, (local celebrity Jeff Howell included, and even N'SYNC's Joey Fatone stayed all night long), and from what I was told, we had an outstanding musical evening. It sure is a blast, but I can't help thinking that St. Patrick's day is a crazy excuse for a holiday. Ireland could do with a few snakes, you know?

Friday, March 16th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Been Down So Long, Chicken Strut, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Wolfman's Brother, Built for Comfort, Friend O'The Devil, Love Comes Easy*, Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Two: Mellow*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Cold Wind Blows*$, Look-A-Py-Py, Strobe Light*, Release Me*, The Mountain Song*, I Got*, Whatever*.

Set Three: Mr. Spaceman, Sing A Simple Song>Tube$$>Hot Tamales Baby>First Tube>Tube, When the Circus Comes, Smiley Garcia*, The Thrill is Gone, Shannon*, Sleep#.

*U.f.O.'s.
$w/o Ron, changing a string.
$$Dave sings the wrong verse!
#Dave solo.
Notes - Dave's back, and Jim Mahoney was in the house, (sporting a new haircut and cool shades. Lookin' good, bro!), for this most festive celebration of exactly one year of playing at Kitty O'Shea's. It all started on Thursdays with Joe the bartender, (apropriately in the house this evening), and has evolved into what we now know as funkUs Fridays, (or "Fry"days to some). Many thanks again to Rob for making it all happen for us and giving us a home to develop and grow, and funkUs does grow here. We celebrated quietly by playing with lots of love and energy putting our all into the music for some of our most faithful friends in the crowd. Also, the new original songs are developing nicely and getting a huge response. I can still smell the love from here...

Friday, March 9th, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/?, Fever, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Chicken Strut, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Friend O'The Devil, Mellow*, Look-A-Py-Py, Turn on Your Lovelight.

*U.f.O.'s.
**Three "Am I sexy?" babes from the audience singing.
Notes - With Dave unexpectedly called to Boston, (also known as the day Mojo beat up Dave via email), funkUs threw together two power sets and a great show with Chris "The Iceman" Raynor and Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney showing their funki colors. We were treated with a rare appearance from Rob "The Big Worm", from CLR-H20, in the house doing his thing, (as only he can do), and a special kudos to the impromptu back-up singing from the "Am I sexy?" singers! Ask Mojo about that...

Friday, March 2nd, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Can't Take It With You, Look-A-Py-Py, Love Comes Easy*, When the Circus Comes, Marie's The Name, Shannon*, Friend O'The Devil, Turn on Your Lovelight.

*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O. debuts.
$w/o Mojo.
Notes - Adam's back and the funkUs 5-piece, with the ever-enduring Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney, grooved heavily all night long. With more new material in the mix, (two new debuts), the funkUs grows on. It's getting looser, people...

Thursday, March 1st, 2001 - Kitty O'Shea's

Set One: Been Down So Long, Fever, Ticket To Ride, Party 'til the Money Runs Out>Iko Iko Iko>Party 'til the Money Runs Out, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Runaround, What Would You Say, Jump 'n' Jivin', Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Three: Tore Down, Evil Ways>Black Magic Woman, Friend O'The Devil, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Funky Jam, Roll**, Hey Bartender.

*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O., a very extended version.
$Ron and Dave only.
Notes - Due to unfortunate circumstances, (let's just say a little madness in the family), we unexpectedly had a funkUs semi-acoustic evening sans Adam with Jim Mahoney on board. We pulled out all of the stops, (just look at the songs!), and pulled off a fun evening full of dancing for this Vista Way party. Raffles, drink and lots of music and fun. Just where did all that come from? We may never know, but we'll just chalk this one up as one of those random evenings where we pulled it together and managed to surprise everyone, even ourselves.

$The Great Guiness Toast - a world record in the making, and Kitty's was part of it with toastmaster Scotty.
$$w/ Alison on sax... (Adam!)
#Harmonica Pete on back-up vocals.
Notes - The core 4 alone on a record setting evening, thanks to Guiness. At exactly 11PM, we were part of the largest group toast in the world. Toastmaster Scotty led us through it with a beauty toast, eh. We were feeling a bit loose as we debuted our newest song to the faithful, and even let a sax onstage during the last set, (apologies to Matt that we couldn't work it all out). All in all, it was a pretty flavorful evening, if you ask the Orlando Weekly. Flavor Rock... What's that all about anyway?

Thursday, February 22nd, 2001 - Barbarella's
with CRUSH

Showcase Set: Roll*>Strobe Light*, Love Comes Easy*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Mellow*, I Got*, Shannon*, Smiley Garcia*, Icarus*, Whatever**, Hope*, Sing a Simple Song.

*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O debut, inciting two guys to rush the stage.
Notes - Kudos to "Friends of the Underground" and our friends at where2groove.com (now defunct) for bringing us back to UTOPIA, an experience that features an evolving landscape of sights, sounds, and feelings, featuring live DJs and bands all night long, (the last time we enjoyed the utopian experience was 8/10/00). As this underground evening continues to evolve, we're happy to be a part of it along the way. The spirit is high and the feelings are good, people. Unfortunately, it was another sparse night, (damn that Ben Harper!), as our good friend Ben Shader and CRUSH hit the stage with their feel-good original mainstream rock 'n' roll. The core 4 hit the few people there with an all original set, including a debut, which was pretty well received. Of course, the eclectic nature of our songs were sometimes confusing, such is the funkUs way (or is it the flavor?), but we managed to generate some excitement, including the two guys who rushed the stage for the new song. What exactly does that mean? At least it wasn't as hot as last time.

**w/o Dave, changing a string.
Notes - Another feel good funkUs "Fry"day (Cab pegged that one) with Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney joining the core 4. It was a rough gig last week, but things are starting to smooth out a bit with the new membership of the ever-growing funkUs, and as we always say, it doesn't stop here, people, the funkUs grows on...

Saturday and Sunday, February 10th & 11th, 2001 -

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - What a fabulous weekend of recording, thanks to Rob and Billy at the Audio Recording Technology Institute, (ARTI). Much was accomplished toward finishing the debut funkUs CD, including the introduction of the funkUs horns: Chris Charles, Chris Raynor, and Clay Watson. To say it was a productive weekend is an understatement. We rocked! The funkUs grows on...

**U.f.O. debut.
$w/ Chris Raynor.
Notes - Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney joins the core 4 (with Chris "The Iceman" Raynor joining later) on a strange funkUs Friday. Things were a little manic on and offstage, possible due to the full moon past, and maybe some jitters about the upcoming marathon weekend of recording, (more on that). It could have something to do with rollercoasters, too, but it definitely didn't help the mood of the evening being holed up at the end of the night, (not unlike a certain incident in Waco, Texas, only with a happier ending). Whatever the case, Danny was back to document the evening on mini-disc, (soon available on the web). We can listen and be the judge of it all later.

#Ron and Mojo start, shortly joined by Dave then Adam. Lowdown, slow vamp.
Notes - Lights, tapers, music... the illusion was complete. For weeks, I've been hearing comments about how funkUs Fridays are just like concerts, but this week, (huge thanks to Randy), we had the full light show going on! And our good friend, Danny Lane was onhand to represent the taping community by attempting to record the evening for funki everywhere, (unfortunately, nothing salvagable... next week...). We played an entire set of original music, (almost), in their honor. The funki give, we give back. It's definitely in the spirit of things, wouldn't you say?

**Ron slams a beer and uses the empty glass as a slide.
Notes - Rob the bartender's birthday, Joe behind the bar... Needless to say, the Jagermeister flowed all night long. Okay, so there weren't any Seagram's girls, but we didn't miss 'em as the place was packed with good feelings and good people. Even Tony Hume from 4:20 showed up at the end of the evening to share in the love. It sure felt like a Friday...

#Ron gets a little MLK Jr. going with an inspirational speech set to music vamped into "Shannon".
##Ron and Dave only.
Notes - Back home with the core 4 for another fantastic night at Kitty's. We love this place! More new faces in the crowd as The funki shared in the grooves all night long. It's this crowd that keeps us going, full of old friends and new, and lots of spirit and energy flowing back and forth between the stage and the crowd. That's what I was feeling, anyway... No one asked about the vacuum cleaner on the stage, our silent memorial to the recently passed Mimi Fishman.

$Oh, I gotta remember this one. This redneck walks up after this song and says, "Play some Led Zepplin!", to which I responded, "That was Led Zepplin." (talking about the U.f.O just played), and he says, "Oh, I knew that..."
$$had to satisfy a Bob Segar request by saying, "This one has a lot of the same notes in it." It worked, too.
%unfinished due to the very loud "Bass Fart". That's what happens when you spill beer on a speaker.
Notes - Downtown with the core 4 and no training wheels. Sigh... I think you might get the picture of what we were up against here. To be fair, we do have some people who really dig us downtown, but I think we've got a round peg in a square hole kind of thing happening here. I just couldn't think straight what with all of the "Lynard Skynard", "Bob Segar", and "Led Zepplin" yelling going on, and the heavily tatooed metal heads declaring, "These guys SUCK!" after hearing two seconds of "Tube" before walking out. People, please! We're all just trying to have some fun. Can't we all just get along?

Notes - Wow, a funkUs five-piece (Jim Mahoney on board) on a record-breaking funkUs Friday with wall to wall people on a night that Rob says broke the record "by a lot". Add that to the fact that Bongo Willy and Harmonica Pete were celebrating their birthdays, and of course the spirit was high! Too much fun for one evening? Hey, the New Year's begun and we're just getting started, people...

#Mad Dog and Cat fight. Chaotic, baby! Clapton would've dug it.
Notes - An interesting beginning to the new year with a record 6-piece funkUs "growing on". With Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney and "The Iceman", Chris Raynor, joining the core 4 of Ron, Mojo, Dave and Adam, the stage never seemed smaller. The added membership allowed us to open things up a bit, which is always fun, and play some of the lesser known U.f.O's. It was great to be home and partying with Rob and the crew after a much needed hiatus. Thank goodness the holidays are over. The feelings were strong and the spirit was high as we rocked and The funki danced on. As if that's not enough, there were lots of new faces on hand witnessing the funkUs grow into the New Year, showing us just what "word-of-net" promotion can do. (Thanks again to The Jambase.com.) Happy New Year! It's gonna be another fun one...
