#funkUs presents "Strobe Light" while Tilea (sp?), the Jager girl, passed out shots and The Mayor spread some funki love...
$w/o Dave and Adam.
Notes - Part Two of the CD release weekend with The funkUs Five, we had wheelchairs and bodies dancing throughout the club! Not something you see everyday, but the pure spirit of enjoying the moment definitely filled the room. I'm not really sure if I got the last set right, but I know we played "Chalkdust Torture" because the newly reunited Phish had just played it on SNL moments before our last set began. And we continued our Christmas tribute to Roten Rosen with "The Little Drummer Boy." That was the last gig of 2002, so we'll see you all next year to do it all over again!

THE 2ND CD RELEASE WEEKEND PARTY
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Look-A-Py-Py, Love Comes Easy*, Cold Wind Blows*, Mr. Spaceman, Strobe Light*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright.
Set Two: Roll*, Smiley Garcia*, Shannon*, Bonnie Lopez*, Bouncing Around the Room>You Enjoy Myself (Part II), What's Wrong with You*, The Mountain Song*, Dealt A Queen*, Chemicals*, Animal Walk*, Whatever*.
Set Three: Sing a Simple Song>Auld Lang's Eye, When the Circus Comes, Out There*, Silent Night, I Wanna Be Sedated.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Psyched up from the excitement of being on the radio all day as Jim Philips and The Philips Phile's Pick of the Week (2nd time!) on Real Radio 104.1, ("Icarus" & "Strobe Light" got spins and Dave was briefly interviewed on-air!), The funkUs Five kicked off the CD release weekend with a sort of warm-up evening, (a good thing, too, what with the weather!) Special guest funki, Chris "The Iceman" Raynor had a feature mini-set of original material hardly known to even the most devout funki. (To give you an idea, the last two times we played "Dealt A Queen" were 9/14/02 and 4/20/01! And it's on our first CD!) And, as is becoming a funkUs tradition, we explored the Christmas stylings of our favorite German Heavy Metal band, Roten Rosen, with a version of "Silent Night" that got cat calls like, "You guys are SICK!", a reaction we're particularly proud of. Doesn't happen often! This was a good day...

Saturday, November 30th, 2002 -
Jam Fam Productions Thanksgiving Jam - Holopaw, FL
set lists lost, but here's the "super jam" set:
Set$: Have You Ever Loved A Woman, Funky Jam, Feelin' Alright, Cissy Strut, Stormy Monday, Sample In A Jar, Scarlet Begonias>Bull Creek Jam*>Deep Elem Blues.
*w/ Cocaine & Cissy Strut teases
$featured Tony Hume, Pete Orenstein, Dan Goore, Jason Herold (Kynda), Dave "the cat" Mann (funkUs), Danny Leach (The Shaun Rounds Band), Tony Roman (The Goldminers), Carter Everett (Muck Fires, The Goldminers, Refried Confusion and other projects), Jay Camphire & Russell Gaspard (Refried Confusion), Lyle & Mike Dow on percussion.
Notes - Friends of funkUs were invited to partake in Jam Fam Productions inaugural celebration, the birth of a new, LOCAL, camping festival attended for the most part by Kynda's extended family. Along with Dave the cat and The Shaun Rounds Band, Carter Everett and Jay Camphire, (both members of former jam band, Refried Confusion), kicked out some raw blues for the people. It's been so nice to stretch out those blues legs, and we had a great set for all involved. Jam band scene legend Scramble Campbell was there painting a huge statue of a horse in grand scramble style to Kynda's set, (see the pic below). Awesome! The culmination of the evening (or morning by then) was the 3 hour super jam. The whole thing ended by 6AM, though we felt we could go on and on. What a great time! We absolutely MUST do it again, in full funkUs style, of course. See you then!

set lists lost
Notes - A Friends of funkUs jam with Dave the cat introducing a little blues to the scene with The Shaun Rounds Band featuring SRV prodigy and fellow WPHS graduate, Shaun Rounds, (...both he and Dave graduated locally from Winter Park High School). With no rehearsing at all, it was a night of pure, raw blues (Freddy King, Albert King, Muddy Waters, etc...) and when surprise guest and Dave's When the Circus Comes bandmate, J.F. from The Cirque du Soleil stepped in on the bass, some moe., Phish and Oysterhead ensued, (with some chair-standing involved!) All in all, a different experience from what funkUs usually has to offer, but diversifying and showcasing our roots is what we're all about. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

*U.f.O.'s.
**w/ hip-hop MC Logic doing a little funkUs freestylin'.
$funkUs' favorite T-shirts giveaway.
$$Ron only, with help, (and Mojo changing a string while singing backups).
Notes - The core 4 celebrated a pre-release CD party for the faithful funki with a night of solid playing including a healthy portion of original material and many fan favorites. (This gig was, after all, for the faithful.) The Mayor was in the house, who we honored with the spontaneous creation of a theme song out of a Meters tune. We introduced a new concept, too. After realizing that we were all out of our funkUs Tees, we decided to dig in our closets and give away some of our favorite T-shirts, including lost funkUs tie-dies and old Grateful Dead tour shirts. Playing-wise, we amazed ourselves, actually, having had such a long break and stepping on the stage with a newfound sense of purpose and understanding. It's just impossible to describe the spirit flowing, but it feels soooooo good! Kudos to new friend Frankie, (aka Logic), with his tasty vocal frolicking. Dig it!

*U.f.O.'s.
**w/ Susie on vocals. "Now, waaaaaaaaaaait a minute!" ...Classic!
$Dave only, a modified "Dear Prudence."
Notes - Not many gigs this month as we're gearing up for our upcoming CD release, so this gig had some fire under it for The funkUs Five, and it turned out to be another great night of music as we dusted off some older favorites and encouraged some strangeness, (like Susie's continued renditions of "Shout".) Also of note, The Mayor officially embraced his role, and will be making an appearance for the party. See you then!

Saturday, October 26th, 2002 - Harper's Tavern - Winter Park, FL
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Mellow*, Wolfman's Brother, Smiley Garcia*, Let Love Rule, Love Comes Easy*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>I'll Take You There>Feelin' Alright.

Set Three: What Would You Say, Chemicals*, Look-A-Py-Py, Out There*, I Wanna Be Sedated.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five with Chris "The Iceman" Raynor instead of Jim (scoping out the New Hampshire scene) on our LAST gig here at Harper's. Yup, they're closing again. A Winter Park tradition, gone for the second time. Ah, well... huge thanks to Rob for trying to make it happen, but The Fates were against us, eh? In any case, The funki made a strong showing, (THANKS ALL!), and we made our last Harper's gig one to remember.
|
| |
Set One$: Sing a Simple Song>Smiley Garcia*, Shannon*, Strobe Light*, Stir It Up, Sexx Laws, Sample In A Jar, Sweet Home Chicago.
Set Two: Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Whatever*, Friend O'The Devil, Look-A-Py-Py, The Mountain Song*, You Enjoy Myself (Part II), Release Me*, Hit The Bricks*, Bonnie Lopez*, Name That Show*, When The Circus Comes, Tube>First Tube>Tube, Out There*, I Got*.
*U.f.O.'s.
$The "S" set.
Notes - The core 4, a guest band and The Strongbow Girls! Need I say more? Kudos to Bill and his new band for coming in and entertaining the hell out of the crowd before rushing off to The Cricketer's Arms for a show of their own. All in the name of music, eh? Madmen! (Reminds us of us!) We had great fun as The Strongbow Girls turned everyone on... to their cider, (Thanks for the pics!), and we had a little fun with our first set, playing only songs that begin with "S". Cute, huh? We would've put "Sympathy for the Devil" in there, too, if 8 Lives Left hadn't played it before us! Next time...

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2002 - Dave's Down Under, Rollins College - Winter Park, FL
Set One: Roll*, Hit The Bricks*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Mr. Spaceman, Love Comes Easy*, Strobe Light*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', When the Circus Comes, Cold Wind Blows*, Hope*, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
Set Two: Out There*, Shannon*, Smiley Garcia*, Bonnie Lopez*, The Mountain Song*, Name That Show*, Release Me*, What's Wrong with You*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - Hey, The funkUs Five's first college concert! Woo hoo! So it was sparsely attended, (The Dark Star Orchestra and midterm exams, you know), but we had a great time with the few there, (Pete had even seen us before!), and can really see the potential of a gig like this. (I remember college, and I, for one, would've LOVED the opportunity to see live music right on campus.) Kudos to Sabrina for getting us there and to Jane for helping put on a fun show. Next time, we just need to spread the word a bit, methinks. See you then!

#Jim stands on a chair!
##Ron only, with help.
Notes - The funkUs five, wrapping up their fourth downtown appearance this month, enjoyed a surprise visit from fellow funki, Clay Watson. (After playing with us, he went on to play a gig on Church Street w/ The Legendary JC's.) It's always a pleasure to have Clay blow with us, (he's so damn good, eh?) It was kind of a sleepy night for downtown, but we managed to have some fun with the small underground crowd, funki & family aplenty. Thanks again to Melinda and Dan for having us and we'll see Tanqueray's next year!

Notes - The funkUs five descend on downtown underground again with a fun crowd all night long. Downtown was hopping and downtown underground at Tanqueray's was packed with new faces enjoying the flavor rock. Just another all around night of good music and great fun. Let's do it all again tomorrow night!

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Caldonia>Kansas City>Sweet Home Chicago>Caldonia, Chicken Strut, Let Love Rule, Wolfman's Brother, Hit The Bricks*, Friend O'The Devil, Shannon*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright.

$joined by some guy on vocals...
Notes - DESPITE a brief and expensive encounter with one of the Vultures of downtown, (damn the tow truck drivers... trying to tow Dave's truck as he's unloading? Gimme a break! Kudos to Jared and Paul for stepping up for us), The funkUs Five had another great night of music with a really receptive audience that we enjoyed hopefully as much as they seem to. A little tired and bummed, true, but music proved to conquer all again and the bout of bad luck dissipated into the night. (Is it The Scruffy curse? Last time we were here, Dave spilled a beer into our sound board!) This place continues to keep a warm spot in our hearts, though, as we strive to tame the beast that is downtown. The funkUs grows on...

Friday, October 11th, 2002 - Kitty O'Shea's
Set One: Sing a Simple Song>Smiley Garcia*, Sample In A Jar, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, How Blue Can You Get>The "Praise God, She's Alright" Revival*, Mr. Spaceman, Turn On Your Lovelight.

Set Three: You Enjoy Myself (Part II), Icarus*, Mellow*, When The Circus Comes, Out There*, Dear Prudence$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Dave & Ron only.
Notes - The funkUs Five played a sort of homecoming, (Dave's return!), to a very enthusiastic, if not insistant group of newly infected funki. The demand was made for music, and funkUs knows how to deliver as we continue to explore the flavor rock, (punctuated by a spontaneous revival out of some blues.) Definitely another great night of music worthy of the funkUs Fridays we've come to enjoy these past two years. Dig the spirit!

Set Three: Friend O'The Devil, Shannon*, You Enjoy Myself (Part II), I Wanna Be Sedated, What's Wrong with You*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The funkUs Five break new ground in a new downtown venue, (which also happens to be home to the rebirth of The Sunday Night Blues Jam Downtown with Jim Mahoney's Houseshakers.) It's not often we play with the NYC skyline in the background, but hey, if we can make it there...

$$Ron on guitar & vocals, Dave, Jim & Mojo back-up vocals w/ Coyotes & Towndogs' Bill Taft on guitar & Scott Gilmore on bass PLUS Brand New Jalopy's Jalopy Joe on drums.
Notes - Thanks once again to Phil and The Songwriters Showcases of America for organizing this very large downtown festival, featuring over 70 acts on 14 different stages, in beautiful, historic DeLand. There was a tremendous turnout this year and we can see that this little town's annual festival is gonna keep growing, just like us! Also, thanks to Logan Belle for producing a radio spot that featured clips from an interview with funkUs for WMFE's The Arts Connection. We saw many newly infected funki as seeds were planted from our main stage performance which turned out to be a great warm-up for the festivities to come later at The Artisan Inn w/ The Coyotes & Towndogs and Brand New Jalopy. All in all, it was a day and night full of music, friends old and new, and that wonderful spirit of community that feeds us time and time again. We'll see you next year!

Saturday, September 28th, 2002 - The Artisan Inn - DeLand, FL
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let The Good Times Roll, Mellow*, Gone, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Mr. Spaceman, Friend O'The Devil, Tea in the Sahara, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.

Set Three: Mustang Sally, Whatever*, Chicken Strut, Cold Wind Blows*, When the Circus Comes, Shannon*, I Got*, I Wanna Be Sedated.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Happy birthday to Chris, and a happy anniversary to funkUs and The Artisan Inn, celebrating a year EXACTLY since we started playing there, (the first time was during The DeLand Original Music Festival 2001). Even Amy was there! We had a super time with the DeLand funki in the house who got to see the evolution of "The Aquarium," a unique set up inspired by The Artisan's stage complete with fish and a turtle! Again, you have to see it to understand, and DeLand is the place. Unfortunately, this was our last regular gig this year, (save for an appearance at The DeLand Original Music Festival 2002!), so unless you make the quick hop to Orlando, we'll see you in 2003!

Notes - There was once a little known rotating blues project in Orlando called The Blues Torpedos, who were effectively resurrected to back up Ron for this Friends of funkUs gig without Dave and Adam. The line-up included Ron, Jim and Mojo with Jeff Willey and Super Dave Scitney filling in. The blues flowed all night long, and even some funkUs originals snuck into the set. I'm told that a couple of Dave's songs were "covered," for the self proclaimed Daveheads in the house, a move as unpredictable as funkUs Fridays always will be.

#for the fallen...
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The funkUs Five descended on Winter Park and brought a gang of funki with them on what would have been a sleepy night. No such thing with the funki! Dirty Dave lived up to his name, receiving the longest lap dance I've ever seen! A bit distracting, but very entertaining! (You owe us, bro!!) The energy continued through the night as new spirits got infected with the funkUs while some continued to get infected, (Starlett and the Big Man), dancing all night long. Dig it, baby! Kudos to the group of 1st funki in the house, too! Thanks for taking the journey with us all. Finally, thanks to all the staff, (even though they like giving us a hard time!) We're really starting to dig the old Winter Park spirit, and for some of us, it's good to be home.

Notes - No surprises this week, (ROB!), but The funkUs Five delivered another night of solid, spacey music. Doors have been open and the floodgates are filling with tasty jams as we expand our minds and horizons in anticipation of the brave new world ahead. In other words, it's gonna get freaky, people! You have been warned...

Notes - The party continues downtown with The funkUs Five, joined by fellow funki, Chris "The Iceman" Raynor, with whom we were able to play some lesser known original songs, ("Animal Walk," "Dealt A Queen," and a re-debut, "Chemicals".) Kudos to the cats from DeLand, in town for the Little River Band yet stayed ALL NIGHT to party with us! Russ Rollins, King Monster of the Midday on Real Radio 104.1, was in the house, as well! By the time we were done here, we felt our $300 bar tab was well spent. Another landmark evening!

$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The funkUs Five return to downtown underground and pulled off a set, (Set Two), hailed as the best set ever played at Tanqueray's by the staff, (thanks, Silas!) The place just suddenly broke out with girls standing on chairs dancing... literally. Jim and Dave even decided to join them! Another landmark this evening was the first ever funkUs acoustic set, (Set One). And we topped it all off with an insisted encore that brought us well past 2AM. (What? Past 2AM in downtown Orlando? Don't tell Glenda that!!) All in all, a great beginning to a weekend downtown.

TOURBABY! with Dawn Catron, Hugo, & Jeff Howell
Set: Strobe Light*, Love Comes Easy*, Whatever*, Cold Wind Blows*, Out There*, Smiley Garcia*, The Mountain Song*, Shannon*, Release Me*, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin', What's Wrong with You*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Hugo joins Ron onstage.
Notes - The TourBaby came, and we sent her off with style. Our dear friend, Jeff Howell, (from The Monsters of the Midday on Real Radio 104.1), graciously handled the hosting duties, and Russ, Dirty Jim and Bo "The Big Man" Rhodes were in the house! Dawn Catron and Hugo were fabulous in representing Orlando's independent music scene, and we hope we did the same. Really, this was a night of old and new for The funkUs Five. We were practically born on that stage 12 years ago, but haven't been there for over a decade, so it was only fitting to bring a TourBaby into the world as we returned to the place that really started it all for us. (Even Jeff Willey was there!) It's definitely a night we'll remember!

Notes - The funkUs Five welcomed Meredosia, who made the drive with some friends all the way from West Palm Beach, and we're SO glad they did. What a blast! (Too bad they couldn't stay...) We were checking out some great music, partying with new people, and pretty much just diggin' on the spirit in the room. It's what funkUs Friday is all about!

Saturday, August 24th, 2002 - Hard Rock Live
with Bughead & Kynda
Set: Strobe Light*, Smiley Garcia*, Love Comes Easy*, Out There*, The Mountain Song*, Release Me*, Whatever*, I Got*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - HUGE kudos to our brothers in Kynda for putting together this fun-filled line-up, and thanks to everyone who showed up early enough to catch our opening set. Hopefully, what you saw was the funkUs Five as you've never seen them before. Hopefully, what you didn't see or notice were the trials we endured to make it through the set, like Ron blowing up an amp during sound check, or Adam breaking a drum head in the first song, or Dave and his massive tuning breakdown. Here's to hoping next time goes much smoother! (Actually, here's to just hoping that there is a next time!) Great fun, people! Those who stayed got the chance to see some great sets from Bughead & especially Kynda, too!
|
| |
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Tore Down, Fever, Wolfman's Brother, Chicken Strut, Mellow*, Gone, Mr. Spaceman, The Leader, When the Circus Comes, Drink Heavily*, Turn On Your Lovelight.

Notes - The funkUs Five again with a warm-up party for the big show. We even snuck in the chosen songs in the second set! Hope no one noticed... Oh, and Capron lied. THIS was his last funkUs Friday. (He decided to stay in town long enough for the HRL show. What a guy!)

Saturday, August 17th, 2002 - Harper's Tavern - Winter Park, FL
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Been Down So Long, Fever, Mellow*, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Friend O'The Devil, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, How Blue Can You Get, Mr. Spaceman, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.

#Ron only, with help.
Notes - The funkUs Five returned to Winter Park for another people packed good time. We layed an all orignal set on them, (with a little Phish for flavor), and it went over extremely well with old friends and new. We look forward to next time, as the funkUs will continue to grow in these fertile lands!

Set Three: Gone, Love Comes Easy*, Strobe Light*, Bonnie Lopez*, Owner of the World, I Wanna Be Sedated, Out There*.
*U.f.O.'s.
#The 3 Elvises...
Notes - The funkUs Five had a surprise for the few in attendence to commemorate the anniversary of Elvis's death, and it's one of those things you just had to be there for. Definitely more material for some funkUs folklore and the few who saw it... and what a way to send off brother Capron on his last funkUs Friday!

#Denver and Peggy on percussion.
##with Rickey from Coyotes & Towndogs on vocals.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The core 4 recreates the "Aquarium" in DeLand for another fun filled Saturday, (...had to field a few, "Where's Jim?" questions...). This time, we had the place packed with friends, family and some familiar DeLand faces, including Rickey from Coyotes & Towndogs setting in for an impromptu blues number, (in which he sings about funkUs in DeLand). Dancing and good vibes ensued all night long, (after Ron went into the audience and recruited dancers!), even when the crowd shrunk in the wee hours. Of course, the lovely Chris, our gracious host, had a lot to do with keeping the dance floor warm all night, too, but Peggy, Lisa and crew kicked off the evening in grand style, as only true funki can. (Thanks Peggy and Denver for covering percussion duties!) Though we are toted as the reason for these gatherings, I tend to think we're just an excuse for having a good time, which was definitely on the plate this evening! We'll be back in September for Chris' birthday weekend and our year anniversary playing in DeLand to the day! Woo hoo!
|
| |
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Chicken Strut, Wolfman's Brother, Smiley Garcia*, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Mellow*, Love Comes Easy*, Drink Heavily*, Birds of a Feather.
Set Two: Roll*, Strobe Light*, Whatever*, Shannon*, The Mountain Song*, Bonnie Lopez*, Friend O'The Devil, Name That Show*, Out There*, Turn on Your Lovelight.
Set Three: You Enjoy Myself (Part II), Bouncing Around the Room, Icarus*, Release Me*, I Got*, I Wanna Be Sedated, What's Wrong with You*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - Well, it's been a LONG time since the core 4 has played together alone, (last time was 03/16/02), but consider us inspired as we brought forth our best, including 16 original songs! HUGE thanks to our new friends Jason & Lynn for taping the event for us and digging the flavor for the first time! Woo hoo! Hopefully, we'll get this show online for all to share, especially you PA funki, starved for a little flavor rock. The funkUs continues to grow...

*U.f.O.'s.
#with The Iceman, (a different one), from Detroit.
Notes - Newly renovated and reopened Harper's Tavern, a Winter Park legend, is back and the funkUs Five helped kick off a new era of partying in Winter Park. The place was packed with friends from Peggy's Pad, (after our afternoon pre-party), and many funki, curious to see the place after having burned down so long ago. (We tore the roof off the place and burned it down again!) Also, many new faces were in the large listening room, digging the flavor for the first time. The funkUs continues to grow...

*U.f.O.'s.
#Chris "The Iceman" Raynor sits in.
$Dave again on the prowl, has a group of funki outside the club dancing and singing "Got My Mojo Workin'", while Ron, also on the prowl, (wirelesses all around), has a conga line going inside.
$$Ron & Dave only.
Notes - With two power sets and the funkUs Five, (Chris came in later), back home at Kitty's again, the spirits were indeed with us, in more ways than one! Ron and Dave continue to break in the new wireless systems, bringing the jam into the crowd. Steve helped Dave finish a song, and later declared after some outside jamming, "I've never seen anything like it!" (And he's known us for years!) The freedom that the wirelesses bring is SOOO much fun and really just brings a new dimension to the jam. See funkUs standing on a chair near you!

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Tore Down, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Wolfman's Brother, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Three: What Would You Say, Low Rider, Release Me*, The Leader, How Blue Can You Get, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, I Wanna Be Sedated, What's Wrong with You*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
#Ron only.
##Dave steps outside and Peggy helps him get a beer, all during the song and solo.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - Man, when it rains... This is the gig that almost didn't happen. To start off with, the funkUs Five was lined up and ready to start the show when Dave spills a whole beer into the soundboard, (first time EVER!) Luckily, though, after 10 minutes of scrambling to hook up the house board, we were able to start anyway with hardly anyone noticing. (It wasn't the first beer Dave would spill, either...) Wrestling with a foreign sound system, we did pull the show off as true trubadors do. Kudos to The funki for hanging with us and supporting us, (Peggy and Lisa did their best to keep the dance floor going!) We weren't exactly at the top of our game, but we managed to shrug it off and push on 'til the day...

Set Three: Whatever*, Let Love Rule, Release Me*, Hope*, I Wanna Be Sedated, Out There*, What's Wrong with You*$$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Dave walks through the crowd, outside and gets a Jager shot mid solo behind the bar, then comes back for a cat/dog fight with Jim. (New wireless system, you know...)
$$Ron only, with help.
Notes - Over a month away from home, after collective vacations in England, France, (both during the Queen's Golden Jubilee and The World Cup), and an incredible jaunt to Tennessee for The Bonnaroo Music Festival, we were more than overdue for some jamming after more than a MONTH away. funkUs Friday came back with a vengence, though, with one of the best nights of music in a long time, so said Rob. It just felt REALLY good to be home...

Notes - The second of a two shot at Tanqueray's with the funkUs Five, and a weekend of old friends, new faces and great music was complete. (Special mention goes to Ron for a blistering Red House!) It looks like it will be a couple of months before returning, but return we will for another installment of funkUs Underground! See you then!

*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron forays into the crowd, and never spills the beer precariously perched around his guitar cable.
$$Ron only, with help, (including Alex and Reiner on the cell phones.)
Notes - So strange and welcome to be back at the downtown legacy that has been Tanqueray's for many, many years. The funkUs Five were most welcome playing to a small, but intimate underground crowd. It was a grand time for all! In a room so small, everyone gets in on the act with whatever they can find, including cellphones, (Alex and Reiner!) We're so glad Melinda let us come home, and we tried not to get in trouble! ;^)

Notes - The funkUs Five was back to the "Aquarium" in DeLand for another fun filled Saturday. The crowds are starting to pick up, and we're really starting to create a buzz here. The funkUs is spreading, people! Someone even asked Jim for one of his guitar pics! (A first!) Kudos to Katrina for making the long drive, hopefully starting a trend in making this place another home away from home for the funki. We'll be back in August!

Notes - What a night! 'Twas a most welcome return for the funkUs Five as we played well into the night with an energy not seen in long while, much enjoyed by the many friendly faces in the house. See what a little time off can do? And thanks to old friend, Jeff Willey, one of the original Houseshakers who came up and played some blistering blues for us. Classic!

$$Dave only, with help.
Notes - Our last Kitty's show before a much needed vacation, the funkUs Five was joined by fellow funki, Chris "The Iceman" Raynor and Clay Watson for a special treat in the first set. The crowds started slow, but by the end of the night, it was it's usually rockin' self at Kitty's, a grand time for all. See you in a couple of weeks!

$w/o Ron, changing a string.
Notes - The funkUs Five's second and final appearance at the festival, we were cut a bit short because of the other competing festival, but managed to get our time in and play a solid set to a sparse crowd that was digging it. Adam's parents were there to see just what we've been up to all these years at The Lounge. Huge thanks to Lisa and The Fringe for having us out, and here's to hoping we do it all again next year!

Saturday, May 11th, 2002 - The Artisan Inn - DeLand, FL
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Tore Down, Fever, Tea in the Sahara, Mellow*, Smiley Garcia*, Mr. Spaceman, Ripple, Many Miles>Mr. Cab Driver>Truckin'>Many Miles, Turn on Your Lovelight>Hot Tamales Baby>Turn on Your Lovelight.

Set Three: Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Out There*, What's Wrong with You*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - Well, the funkUs Five was finally back, (we hadn't grace the "Aquarium" since March), and even though the crowd was a bit sparse, it was another grand time as we put forth a happy, hippy throwdown that went over really well. The spirit is always here in DeLand! We gave Michelle a little pep talk with a pre-bachelorette send off, a couple of the Coyotes and Towndogs were in the house cutting the rug with Chris and company, Tammy and Claude, as usual, were in fine form behind the bar, and Sylvan, one of the first funki in DeLand, made it down. We were the happening place in DeLand on an unusually sleepy Graduation night at Stetson.
|
| |
Set One: Sing a Simple Song>Smiley Garcia*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Tea in the Sahara, Wolfman's Brother, Mr. Spaceman, The Leader, Bonnie Lopez*, Turn on Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
Set Two: Fever$, Release Me*, Strobe Light*, Birds of a Feather, Cold Wind Blows*, You Enjoy Myself (Part II), Chicken Strut, When the Circus Comes, Many Miles>Mr. Cab Driver>Truckin'>Many Miles, Out There*, Hope*, Name That Show*, The Thrill Is Gone, I Got*, I Wanna Be Sedated, What's Wrong with You*$$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Erica on drums, with help.
$$Ron only, with help.
Notes - Fresh from the Fringe, the funkUs Five was psyched for a great second show, which is exactly what occured. The beautiful women abounded, (like Erica on her drum oddessy), and we had them grooving to the flavor all night. Coming of the "high" from the previous show, we really kept the spirit rollin', and all in all, it was well worth the extra effort for the double gig. It's all about the party, people...

Friday, May 10th, 2002 - The Orlando Fringe Festival, Heritage Square, downtown Orlando
before october
Set: Mellow*, Strobe Light*, Love Comes Easy*$, Take a Rest*$$, Friend O'The Devil$$, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Shannon*, The Mountain Song*, Whatever*, Release Me*, Out There*, I Got*.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Adam plays with a broken snare head.
$$w/o Adam, who went ALL the way to his car for a new snare head.
Notes - The funkUs Five forays into the downtown scene, (once again plagued with equipment failure, but as always, we took it in stride filling in with a couple of sorta-acoustic tunes.) We really enjoyed this beautiful outdoor venue on such a gorgeous day, and the crowd, both direct and indirect, really got into it. Kudos to Chris for a tremendous job on the sound board! We can't wait until next Thursday! Amazingly, the festival's timing was spot on, and we were immediately off to Kitty's...
|
| |
Saturday, May 4th, 2002 - The Wall Street Plaza, downtown Orlando
with Freeflow Conspiracy
Set: (soundcheck - Chicken Strut, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin') Whatever*, Strobe Light*, Smiley Garcia*, Love Comes Easy*, Shannon*, Name That Show*, Cold Wind Blows*, Hope*, Release Me*, The Mountain Song*, Out There*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five forays into the downtown scene again, doing our opening act duties for the hot and happening Freeflow Conspiracy from Melbourne. It made for a strange bill, but despite a guitar strap disaster, (saved by Aree and crew!), it turned out to be a lot of fun, (the first of a string of outdoor, downtown shows this month). The real fun almost happened when we ALMOST booked a Scruffy gig for midnight, but the missing band eventually turned up, which left us free to celebrate Jimmy's landmark birthday the rest of the night like dancing fools at Tanqueray's. (On a side note, the spirit of the blues is alive and well...)
|
| |
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Can't Take It With You, Let Love Rule, Mellow*, Love Comes Easy*, Low Rider, Party 'til the Cows Come Home, Smiley Garcia*, Mr. Spaceman, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse.
Set Two: Roll*, Strobe Light*, You Enjoy Myself (Part II), Friend O'The Devil, Bonnie Lopez*, Drink Heavily*, When the Circus Comes, Whatever*, Shannon*, Out There*, Turn On Your Lovelight.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Another inebriated night of funkUs Five foolish fun. We started a bit late with Adam leaving his cymbals and sticks at home, but he made it in good time and we played a couple of strong sets to make up for it. The level was a bit subdued, and to tell the truth, I can't remember if we played a third set or not! My notes say no, so we'll go with that, shall we?
|
| |
Saturday, April 27th, 2002 - The Cabbage Patch - Samsula, FL

*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron and Dave only.
$$Ron only.
Notes - The funkUs Five returns home after a two week break, (it felt like we hadn't been there for ages!), and it was a warm, welcome homecoming. New faces, (as always), and many friendly faces, we had all the familiar comforts of Kitty's that we've come to know and love. We reponded to the great vibe with some great playing, much needed after such a long break. Ahh...

Saturday & Sunday, April 6th & 7th, 2002 - ARTI Studios, Orlando, FL
Songs mixed: Hit the Bricks*, The Mountain Song*, Animal Walk*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - And we are FINALLY done mixing the second CD! Yay! (Didn't I say we'd be done last year?) In any case, I think (hope) you'll see the difference with the time spent on this one. Just some bells and whistles and a bit of tweaking to do and we're looking at a summer release. Stay tuned!

$Mojo breaks a string, finishes song.
$$Mojo breaks ANOTHER string.
$$$Mojo amazingly breaks a third string. He only has four, you know...
Notes - The funkUs Five, downtown again at last. It's really telling when someone asks when we play again, and we proceed to tell her about our regular Lake Buena Vista gig at Kitty's, and then she says, "Well, when are you playing in Orlando again?" And we thought we were an Orlando band! In any case, we had another very successful evening with lots of music (and string breaking, Mojo broke his record!), fun, dancing, new funki, old funki, and a $140 bar tab, (another record!) That's downtown O-town for ya... and we love it! (...except for the bar tab.) We'll be on hiatus for a couple of weeks, so see you April 26th for another funkUs Friday, then The MER! Woo hoo!

$Ron hands his guitar to a dancing beauty who joins Jim and Mojo onstage for some mayhem.
Notes - The funkUs Five came on strong tonight with a fun set for all. It started with some pretty impressive table dancing that just blew into a wild frenzy. Scott just flat out called it a great show, and I have to agree. We pulled out some old favorites and was somehow able to tap into a spirit that we haven't seen for a bit, but was a most welcome return. And Bonnie just found out that we named a song after her...

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2002 - Dante's
with Blu, Venus Platt & Popsicle Dynamite
Set: Strobe Light*, Whatever*, Shannon*, Name That Show*, Drink Heavily*, Out There*, I Got*, Release Me*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Kudos to Tim, our new bud from Venus Platt, who invited us to showcase for Orlando's Phurst Degree Records, as they do every "Phurst Wednesday" at Dante's, and we were happy to get a chance to poke our head into the Orlando music scene again. We lurk around in our own little underground thing, but take any opportunity we can to "come out", if you will. We got to finally meet some local icons, (like The Deviate PunkGirL and the infamous Cazzy!), who in turn got to check us out. We came, we drank, we grooved, we drank more. It was definitely fun, and hopefully, some newly infected funki will require treatment in the near future...

#Birthday girl shirt exchange.
$Ron and Dave only.
$$Ron only, with help.
Notes - An historic occasion with the funkUs Five as we decided to show our true colors, or flavor, this evening. Though it was sparsely attended, (and Dose, from Nashville, wasn't able to come), we decided to perform our first CD, flavour, in set one (a first), and debut the line-up for the upcoming second CD, strobelight, (another first). All combined, (including the debut of a new tune), we played a record 22 original songs this evening, almost every original song we know! And, though it was sparsely attended, The funki present were more than appreciative, making for another great night full of the good vibes that keep us going. And if that wasn't enough, recent birthday boy himself, Ron was inspired to do a shirt exchange onstage as a birthday girl in the house was gently coerced into giving up her shirt for a new funkUs shirt, all while the band chugged along with a Muddy Water groove. It's getting wiggy, people...

Notes - This was another "Friends of funkUs" gig. Since Adam is somewhere up north golfing, we had the mighty Super Dave Scitney on the drums putting in a yeoman's effort to fill Adam's spot, and he did a mighty fine job, too, as we knew Super Dave would do. (According to his kick drum head, we were Big Rick and The Chain Gang this evening.) It was great fun with a steady crowd all night, all enjoying a bizzare mix of blues, funkUs and Phish. It's all in the spirit...

Notes - The core 4 celebrated two years of weekly gigs at Kitty O'Shea's! Can you believe it's been that long? Amy and The Jagermeister Girls were in the house to help us celebrate, (not that we need any help drinking Jager!), and many of our dearest friends were there to share in the experience that we've enjoyed for these past couple of years, (among other things, as well. Dig the balloons?). We even pulled out some old favorites and broke in a couple of new songs as the ever-growing funkUs continues to infect the masses. It was a grand time for all, and really, it was an anniversary for all of us! Thank goodness for Kitty O'Shea's!!

Already, we're starting to get some infected funkUs fans to come and see us, all appreciative of the fact that we come all the way to DeLand, (our pleasure, Sylvan), to play for them in our self styled funkUs aquarium, (you have to see it to understand). We even had another guest singer! Looking forward to next time!

##Dave's fault.
Notes - So the funkUs Five got a little carried away this funkUs Friday, and I think we got in trouble, (sorry, Rob!), but once we get started, it's so hard to stop, especially when the crowd is so receptive! The music gelled nicely as we put our best foot forward with an all original set mixed in and some favorites for all. (And on a sad note, we said goodbye to a longtime funki and very dear friend, Laurette, leaving us for new adventures. We'll miss her...) We actually have a couple of week's off from Fridays here and I know I'm going to really miss it, (though we have a special funkUs Saturday coming up)! funkUs Fridays resume March 22nd. See you then!

Notes - What a great night! (Makes up for last week, that's for sure!) First off, our new buds in Coyotes and Towndogs kicked off the show with some Johnny Cash and ended their set by saving the whales, Cheech and Chong style. Awesome! They more than set the mood when the funkUs Five took the stage for two monster sets of great playing. With such a big crowd in the house, it was a fun-filled night all around! I love this place...

$Ron only, with help.
Notes - "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all..." That's how the story went this fine funkUs Friday with the funkUs Five. First, Jim comes in with a story about how one of his guitars broke, then Ron finds out his guitar is broken, then Adam realized he forgot his drum stool (and played the entire night on an empty keg!), then Mojo discovers a grounding problem, and Dave was sick as a dog on many medications and was soon to loose his voice. None of this prevented the gig from going forward, and somehow, through it all, we hung tight and played a good show for an appreciative crowd, unaware of the troubles we faced. No one even realized Dave was sick, somehow, (even when Ron covered a verse of "I Wanna Be Sedated" due to a coughing fit). Those who spotted Adam's throne appreciated it, though, (it's the stuff of legend). That was a rough one...

Notes - Three hefty sets from the funkUs Five downtown again. We must've had fun, because we drank a third of our pay! You gotta love that! Many new faces were glowing with that look of having been freshly infected with the funkUs along with many friendly faces, so I would say that our ever-continuing mission to infect the masses was accomplished. There were a lot of America (the band) fans in the house, too. It's still what's growing on, people! Get on the bus...

Notes - This was almost a "Friends of funkUs" gig, (kudos to Mandy and Kate... and Anna!), but the funkUs Five ended up playing through the night. The Orlando Weekly (thanks Doug!) was in the house shooting some photos for an upcoming article on the band, so that "rock star" mentality (yeah, right!) took over and we played another fun show. One of the fU horns, Clay Watson from Bughead and Soul Cactus, even showed up to jam the last two sets. What a treat!

Notes - This gig felt just like a continuation of the previous evening's spirit, as if we just took an extended break. It was another "Friends of funkUs" gig with Chris "The Iceman" Raynor and four of the funkUs Five (sans Ron). Many new heads were infected with the funkUs, (you can spot it's growth), as the place rocked all night. Added to that was Capt. Morgan and the Morgan Girls and, there you have it, a recipe for fun just waiting to happen. And happen it did. The good Capt. even jumped onstage to play the washboard for a Phish tune. How often do you see that? Only at Kitty's...

Notes - The core 4 return to DeLand to enjoy the spirit of this little town and had a great crowd to play with. It was another great night for us, despite the small amp trouble that fortunately wasn't fatal. (Thanks to Rickey from Coyotes & Towndogs for having our back!) There was dancing all night long as the funkUs continues to infect the masses abroad. A guest vocalist? The whole club suddenly sings the national anthem? See why we keep coming back?

Notes - Where to begin? This was indeed a fun and strange funkUs Friday, as we've come to love and expect, with The core 4 and things started right off with a bang, (a little late setting up the recording equipment, but another night has been documented). The place was packed with people from all over, (including Clara from Prague who stated her love for "the fat black man, the little Chinese boy and the albino"), and even the regulars had some surprises, (What's up with the hair, Nature??) It all combined for an evening full of the spirit that we've come to enjoy so much. Plus, we had to make our little statement at the end of the night with a sacrifice by fire, perhaps cruel, but necessary. It's only rock 'n' roll...

Notes - This show was actually approved by the fire marshalls, (good job, Rob!). The funkUs Five played two monster sets with Chris "The Iceman" Raynor also on board, (on harmonica and video camera duty). Our friend, Brian from Where2Groove.com (now defunct), was also there to update the live set online, and a grand time was had as we documented the entire evening for an unusually small crowd. Small, yet very enthusiastic and fun.

It's really great to meet new people as the funkUs continues to infect new fans. Speaking of new fans, Ashley celebrated her birthday with us and definitely shared in the spirit having been infected only a week before. Welcome, funki! The party's just beginning...

Notes - Imagine our surprise when the funkUs Five arrived... this sounds familiar, but believe it or not, it did happen twice in a row! This time, we were double booked with the band, Choke, (Wee Dave's last gig before heading to Ireland), so we shared the bill, alternating sets, (Adam played drums for their second set, and did a mighty fine job. We're still mad at him for that...), and had a pretty great turn out overall. What does it mean? First two shows of the year, surprise bands? We'll just have to see what this means as we go, but in any case, we all had a grand time and look forward to more gigs at this venue.

Well, it worked out for the best as we discover that this hip young band just wanted a place to play, and brother Rob was just all too willing to help out. That's the spirit I keep talking about, people! It was a great start to the new year, and the crowd that came for them, stayed to party with us, so a great time was had by all... again! Happy New Year! It's gonna be another fun one...
