**U.f.O. debut.
Notes - The funkUs Five played the last show of 2003 on this fine evening, and with a room full of funki, it was a great send off for us. We debuted new original material, (just a hint of what's in store for next year), including "Everybody's Right", one of our newest jams, and "Cruel Corrine", a song by The Weary Boys who personally gave us permission to do what we like with it... which we will! Huge thanks to friends and fans who keep supporting us by coming out and having a great time, and here's looking forward to another fun-filled year! Have safe and happy holidays, and we'll see you in 2004!

Set: Release Me*, Bonnie Lopez*, Whatever*, Cold Wind Blows*, Love Comes Easy*, Smiley Garcia*, Out There*, The Mountain Song*, Strobe Light*, FYF*, Sleep*, I Wanna Be Sedated, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Our great friends in Kynda invited The funkUs Five to open their CD release party, and a great time was had as we always enjoy visiting the Kynda family. So much love! This pairing was a long time coming! Kudos to Tony, Pete, Dan and Jason for having us, and a special thanks for the surprise "Whatever" tease during their set! And a big shout to Scramble Campbell, who decorated the room with his artwork and, in a fit of unplanned inspiration, treated the crowd with a landmark performance by painting Will's big Elvis rug, (a rug that featured a portrait of the King from the cover of Rolling Stone circa 1977.) We all helped Kynda make their mark at Orlando's best live, original music venue this night! HUGE fun!!

#w/ Scottish Bob & Jet Zaleski (from The Eightfold Way) and the ever-lovin' Tommy Reilly in place of Jim, Mojo and Dave.
##Ron only, with help.
Notes - A pre-Thanksgiving bash on the day that always seems like Friday! The funkUs Five had some fun this night inviting old friends onstage for a bit, (to make Ron work a little to make up for last week!) Scottish Bob, Tommy Reilly and Jet Zaleski took the stage for some funky rock and raised the roof as Jim, Dave and Mojo raised some shot glasses. And kudos to old friends and some new friends who came out and enjoyed the funkUs experience, including Grubber, (who drove the farthest), and the founders of Relix Magazine, all of whom we hope to see a lot more of!

Set Two: Roll*, Cold Wind Blows*, Look-A-Py-Py, Dead Flowers>Ball & Chain>Ring of Fire, The Mountain Song*, Cumberland Blues, I Know You Rider, When the Circus Comes, Many Miles>Mr. Cab Driver>Truckin'>Many Miles.

*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O. debut, Jim only.
$Dave only.
Notes - We'll have to call this an appearance by The funkUs Four-and-a-half since Ron showed up without a voice leaving Jim and Dave left to drive the bus. It was an interesting experiment in band versatility that apparently worked as we all had another fun time at Kitty's. Ron was missed, even though he was there... sorta... And Dave unveiled his "new" guitar, a Scramble Campbell original! You have to see it to believe it, and thanks to Matt Neff, you can! Check out his pics below...

Friday, November 14th, 2003 - Kitty O'Shea's
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Been Down So Long, Mellow*, Love Comes Easy*, Strobe Light*, Shannon*, Hope*, The Mountain Song*, Cold Wind Blows*, Release Me*.
Set Two: Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Bonnie Lopez*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Chicken Strut/The Mayor Song, How Blue Can You Get, Low Rider.
Set Three: Ripple#, FYF*, Sleep*, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
*U.f.O.'s.
#Ron only.
Notes - funkUs Fridays continue as The funkUs Five mark another night of almost four years here. Has it really been that long? Due to a cancelled TV appearance the next night, we treated the crowd to the set we WOULD'VE played on TV in the first set. (Perhaps it's best that we stay of the television. We really aren't made for TV, are we?) All I can say about this night is that I wish I didn't miss the stunt Allen pulled during "Shannon"... Oh, MY!
|
| |
Notes - Not a funkUs gig, but a date worth sharing... Kynda set up a "Grateful Dead" type experience at The Hard Rock Vault for a corporate party with some of their closest friends, including Scramble Campbell and funkUs' Dave Mann. In a fit of inspiration, sparked by Dan Goore's Scramble bass (which he was playing that night), Dave got his guitar painted, and is now the proud owner of a Scramble strat...

#Rasta Ron only.
##w/ The Singing Pirates.
###Dave only, w/ "Axl Rose" lipsyncing.
Notes - The funkUs Five celebrated their first Halloween performance, (another first @ Kitty's, of course), with the usual spirit of funkUs Friday intact flavored by the fine fashions of Halloween. Huge thanks to everyone, old friends and new, who came out and participated. Quite a few costumes came out! Some great ones were Roy and the sexy tigress who attacked him, Axl and Slash, the cavewoman, a cowboy, a doctor, a nurse, Juliet (sans Romeo), some bugs and the audience favorite, Gail's Trippy Hippy. Bandmembers added to the spirit with Ron's Rastaman, Jim as Jerry Garcia, Mojo as Jim Belushi's Killer Bee, Adam as... Adam and whatever Dave was, (...still being debated). The band also donned a "musical costume" with an exclusive Grateful Dead second set, a first and last performance. Big thanks to surprise guests, The Singing Pirates! And also, kudos to Deanna, the Viper Schnapps girl, who partied and passed out some cool stuff, including the costume contest's grand prize, a duffel bag prize pack. We didn't plan on the contest, or The Pirates, but things just seemed to happen and we were happy to go with it all. Thanks again to all for making our first Halloween a fun one to remember. We just may have to do another one next year!

Set Three: Smiley Garcia*, Chicken Strut/The Mayor Song, Chalkdust Torture, Shannon*, Hope*, What's Wrong With You*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron only, with help, including The Mayor!
Notes - The funkUs five roll on through October at Kitty's, this time getting some sad news! The Mayor is going to the West coast to spread the funki love, which isn't such a bad thing, but we don't get to share in his energy as much as we've gotten used to. (First Alex and Bongo Willie, and now The Mayor??) No worries, though. The Mayor's spirit is always with us, and we'll just have to go visit with the new constituents sometime. In the meantime, it looks as if it's up to Allen, the ever-prolific funki recruiter, to hold up the homefront, eh?

##Ron & Jim only.
###Dave only.
Notes - The funkUs Five start their month long return (almost) to funkUs Fridays at Kitty's with a fun evening to a room full of some of our favorite people, including rare appearances by Dave's wife, Mandy, a pregnant Eden (congrats!) with hubby, Tom, Danny on another visit from Vegas, Rachel on her LAST funkUs Friday on the "market", Allen and his ever growing crew, plus the MANY other funki in the house as well as some new faces checking out the scene, including the crazy dancing guy, (you go, man!) Busy night! The family spirit present led us through an extended second set that brought us to the end of the evening riddled with dancing throughout. We even fit in some new songs. If this is just a hint of what our return to Kitty's will be like, all I can say is that it's gonna be a GREAT month!

Saturday, September 27th, 2003 - Tanqueray's
Set One: Jim's Choice C Shuffle/Everyday I Have the Blues, Look-A-Py-Py, Can't Take It With You, Willin', Mellow*, Honey Hush, Born in Chicago, Mr. Spaceman, Turn On Your Lovelight.
Set Two: She's Into Something, Dead Flowers>Ball & Chain>Ring of Fire, Love Comes Easy*, Cold Wind Blows*, Hot Tamales Baby, Many Miles>Mr. Cab Driver>Truckin'>Many Miles, Dealt a Queen*, Release Me*, Gloria.
Set Three: Bonnie Lopez*, Low Rider, Animal Walk*, The Mountain Song*, Life By The Drop, She Caught the Katy, She's Tough, Chemicals*, I Wanna Be Sedated.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five of a different flavor, featuring Chris "The Iceman" Raynor in Ron's place. We reached back to our blues roots, and played for an appreciative crowd that really got into it. Sue said we were "more enjoyable than Blue Oyster Cult", who played downtown as well, (hence the "Godzilla" teases all night.) We were certainly having a good time with it, playing songs we'd never played and diggin' some old gems, like Jim's inspired version of "Gloria", or the U.f.O.'s featuring Chris. And when Sue lined up the dancing girls, who could ask for more? Even Dave was inspired enough to give the funkUs shirt he was wearing to Rhonda, a new appreciative funki. This is the stuff memories are made from, people. As we always say, gotta love Tanq's!

Friday, September 26th, 2003 - Tanqueray's
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Look-A-Py-Py, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, How Blue Can You Get, Wolfman's Brother, Strobe Light*.
Set Two: Mellow*, Bonnie Lopez, Low Rider, Love Comes Easy*, FYF*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Friend O'The Devil, Chicken Strut/The Mayor Theme Song, Turn On Your Lovelight.
Set Three: Shannon*, Smiley Garcia*, Sleep*, Birds of a Feather, The Mountain Song*, I Got*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five, downtown underground, and another great, spirited crowd with The Mayor presiding in his usual style. We won't soon forget The Pass-Out Twins, for whom the song "Sleep" was played in honor of, (it's hard to keep up with Allen!) Lots of dancing and smiles this night! All in all, a most enjoyable evening largely due to the people there enjoying it... Just how we like it!
|
| |
Set: Nowhere*, Love Comes Easy**, Georgia Peach*, Name That Show**, Ring of Fire, Caught*.
*Mohave original music.
**U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Technically a Friends of funkUs gig, Dave joined forces with Bing Futch from Mohave to put together a duo specially designed to pass the TourBaby from Orlando's show to Athens, GA. Bravely executed with a mix of funkUs and Mohave orginals, (plus a tribute to Johnny Cash that set the tone for the rest of the night's bumper music), it was a grand experience well worth the journey as they hung with some new, cool cats in a very hip town that knows what it means to have a thriving music scene. It was a beautiful taste...

Friday, September 19th, 2003 - Kitty O'Shea's
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Flip, Flop & Fly, Mellow*, Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Cold Wind Blows*, Dead Flowers>Ball & Chain>Ring of Fire, Strobe Light*, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.

$Started with Ron alone, but the rest of the band slowly joined in. (He's always wanted to try that...)
$$Ron only, with help.
Notes - Wow! Was it really THAT long since The funkUs Five was last here?? We really shouldn't stay away from home that long, as was evident by the collective sigh of relief from the band AND the crowd after the first set. Rested with new toys, we took a bit to get back into the swing, but once the place was kickin', it never felt better. That's what playing at Kitty's always feels like! Ah, it's good to be home...
|
| |
Set: Mellow*, Release Me*, Whatever*, Bonnie Lopez*, FYF*, Strobe Light*, I Got*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - I don't know how we can play in Orlando for SOOOOO long, and only now discover this mecca for Orlando music known as Will's Pub, but that is exactly the case as The funkUs Five discovered for this year's TourBaby showcase. Though less attended than last, being Sunday and all, I feel that this was a much stronger show due to the combination of acts, the venue and the people who attended. The Baby was well received, indeed! (SUNNY took a particular shining to it and featured it through much of her set.) All the music was fabulous, from our friends in Meredosia's laid back improv acoustic set, (a mishap the night before prevented the whole band from coming up from West Palm Beach), to our energetic and dance filled set, to Mohave's groovy coolness, to SUNNY's mind-blowingly soulful Brand New Heavies-style grooves. It was an eclectic soulful mix of artists that I'd love to see share a bill again! Kudos to Todd who did an awesome job at the sound, and a huge thanks to Will for keeping one of coolest music rooms in Orlando so real. Good times, people. Look for us at Will's again, for sure!

Set Three: Dead Flowers>Ball & Chain>Ring of Fire, Hope*, Sleep*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five return to the downtown underground after a very extended break, and what a night! Packed full all night long, they say it was one of the best nights in a long time, and we sure felt the energy of the packed room. Gotta love Tanq's!

#Ron and Dave only.
Notes - The funkUs Five were onhand celebrating Dave's birthday on another fabulous funkUs Friday, (getting rarer and rarer these days, eh?) It wasn't the exact birth date, but, as Dave puts it, "Hey, it's my birthday, I can celebrate it when I want to!" And to celebrate birthdays at Kitty's is apparently the thing to do, what with 3 other birthday's in the house, as well! With so much spirit in the air, it's no wonder that another great time was had by all. Kudos to all the great birthday wishes, (and drinks!) It made for a very interesting evening, no? That and the blueberry...

$aborted, Mojo lost power.
$$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The funkUs Five has been away too long, so it was so nice to begin anew the funkUs Friday tradition here at Kitty's. It was a lean night overall, due to some funki Phishin' in North Carolina & Georgia, (wish I was there!), but not at all lacking in excitement... (For those that were there, who was that guy? "You're all a bunch of skank bitches!"...) Many thanks to The funki who stayed home, endured Mr. Testosterone and dug the positive spirit, especially Allen who continues to drag more potential funki to the experience. (Thanks, bro!) Someone did notice Dave drinking water all night. What's up with that? No worries as that is bound to change at their next Kitty's appearance, which will be Dave's birthday celebration. (Historically, things tend to get a little out of hand when it's a funkUs birthday.) See you then!

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2003 - The Social
The "Best of The Fringe" CD Release Party!
with Naked Head & Sol Season
Set: Whatever*, Love Comes Easy*, Smiley Garcia*, Bonnie Lopez*, Sleep*, The Mountain Song*, Strobe Light*, Out There*, Chicken Strut/The Mayor Theme Song, I Got*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five enjoyed a great evening of music at only their second appearance at The Social, (last time here was 9/7/02). The combination of bands made for a very eclectic line-up that convered a wide range of music from the alternative, Floydian/Berlin stylings of Naked Head, ("Which one's Pink?"), to our usually flavorful grooves to Sol Season's heavy, powerful metal rock; altogether, an apt representation of what The Fringe Festival has come to represent musically. The Mayor was onhand to preside over the few funki in the house, inspiring the last minute addition of "The Mayor Theme Song", and the ever-lovin' Cazzy, the Alien Bluesman... or alien... was present. The night's highlight goes to Bing Futch's mosh excursion for a spirited "I Got" to close our set. Thanks to all for a great time, and special thanks to Linda of Orlando Edge Productions for keeping The Fringe spirit alive.
|

*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron only.
Notes - A record 6 weeks since The funkUs Five has been at Kitty's, but we returned home, at last... if only for a moment! (We'll be back July 25th after Mojo's annual French retreat.) We invited new friends in Mohave to bring their very entertaining brand of Southwest Americana to the house, and very much dug the spirit there! Plus this was the post-Bonnaroo show for The Mayor, who was all smiles and stories... and "I met The Mayor" buttons! Another great time had by all... See you in a month!

#Shook the shelves off the wall!
##Ron only, with help.
Notes - The core 4's first appearance downtown underground, and we had quite the turnout. Lots of new funki infected this night, as I saw some similar faces from the previous evening and the return of a very old friend and fan, Bonna! The ever-present Allen was onhand both nights to represent The funki, in absence of The Mayor, and a few more showed up very late for a rousing Ramones romp that ended up shaking the shelves off the wall. (Those shelves had been there for 14 years, apparently!) Crazy fun...

Friday, May 23rd, 2003 - Tanqueray's
Set One: Mellow*, Chicken Strut, Born Under a Bad Sign, Smiley Garcia*, Drink Heavily*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Wolfman's Brother, Hit the Bricks*, Sleep*.
Set Two: Bonnie Lopez*, Shannon*, Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Strobe Light*, Mr. Spaceman, The Mountain Song*, Release Me*, Turn On Your Lovelight.
Set Three: Name That Show*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Many Miles>Mr. Cab Driver>Truckin'>Many Miles, You Enjoy Myself (Part II)>First Tube.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five end their downtown concert series with a weekend "downtown underground", only too fitting. Memorial Day weekend is traditionally a slow weekend, but with The Orlando International Fringe Festival going on, we were hoping to break that tradition... and that we did... though we did take it a bit too far at the end of the night. You'd think putting up the chairs would've been a hint, eh? Sorry! Got lost in the jam for a bit there...

*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five played very well on an incredible gathering of the Orlando jam scene, the first of it's kind in the heart of downtown Orlando. On all accounts, Jambando! was a success. From 5:30 PM, (a bit delayed due to rain), all of the bands were awesome and did not disappoint. It was a strong showing by jamband fans across the state, as well! Kudos to Tom Myers from Tom's Cool List of Upcoming Shows and Jon Adams, who spins us on WFIT 89.5 FM in Melbourne, for making the journey and getting their first actual funkUs fixes. Also, huge thanks to the dedicted funki grooving and singing all night, presided by The Mayor, of course! The thunderclouds loomed, but the full-on rainbow turned out to be a sign that The Fates were indeed with us and the worst we got was a little sprinkle which cooled the hot afternoon. (We were so lucky!! I think the good spirits flowin' this night made all the difference.) All in all, it was perfect and we couldn't be happier with the result, a great evening of great music and people. Props need to go to Lisa and Linda from Orlando Edge Productions for bringing live music to The Fringe and letting us do our thing for a day, and also to Chris The Sound God for a stellar job well done. Dave, who couldn't get enough of the great vibes, later joined Bluelegs for a couple of songs at a packed Central Station Bar across the street after hours... just the icing to a wonderful night. Look for The Best of Jambando! CD to be circulating amongst the tapers and traders as Dan Sikora was able to tape the whole event! (Thanks, bro!) ...Kynda definitely missed out...

Set: Mellow*, Strobe Light*, Shannon*, Smiley Garcia*, Love Comes Easy*, The Mountain Song*, Release Me*, Whatever*, I Got*, Drink Heavily*.
$Eric Charles's sixth time as a funki, sitting in for Adam.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five minus One got to enjoy a really fun afternoon here. $15 and all the beer you can drink? Over 75 different kinds of beer? Need I say more? Okay, I will. The bands were awesome, too! The South Bumby Allstars' set was a fun, totally improvisational romp, Junkie Rush was groovin' and rockin' at the same time, and Tishamingo from Athens, GA sounded a lot like Widespread Panic, a bit more than a coincidence considering their producer and where they hail from... All that, and I couldn't get away from the St. Pauli Girl table... Great beer, great bands, great fun!

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Everyday I Have The Blues**>Kansas City>Sweet Home Chicago>Everyday I Have The Blues, Mellow*, Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Smiley Garcia*, Little Wing, Love Comes Easy*, Owner of the World, Turn On Your Lovelight.
Set Two: Strobe Light*, Shannon*, Bonnie Lopez*, Chicken Strut, Mr. Spaceman, The Mountain Song*, Release Me*, Whatever*, I Got*.
Set Three: Chalkdust Torture, When the Circus Comes, You Enjoy Myself Jam***.
$Eric Charles's fifth time as a funki, sitting in for Adam.
*U.f.O.'s.
**w/ a BB King tease.
***w/o Ron... (where'd he go?)
Notes - Another Friends of funkUs gig, we'll call this line-up The funkUs Five minus One with Adam out of town and the very able Eric Charles filling in on drums, (the last time he filled in was 5/4/01). Only Eric can cover our original material so aptly! (Thanks, Eric!) So, the energy was a little on the low side, (Xanax anyone?) It's to be expected with a member down, but we had a great, groovin' evening anyway and hopefully everyone else did, too... I personally think the jams in set three were inspired!

Friday, April 25th, 2003 -The World Hunger Benefit Concert Dave's Down Under, Rollins College - Winter Park, FL
with Kynda, The Carribean Crew, & others
Set: Bonnie Lopez*, Strobe Light*$, Take a Rest*$$, Smiley Garcia*, The Mountain Song*, FYF*, Shannon*, Sleep**, Release Me*, Whatever*, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O. debut.
$song aborted because Mojo breaks a string.
$$Ron & Dave only.
Notes - Well, this wasn't at all what it was supposed to be, but ended up being another fun show with fellow heads, Kynda. The funkUs Five did the warm up duties aptly, making the best of a rained out situation (and a broken bass string), and paved the way for Kynda's grooviness, (now serving number 32...) Big thanks to Andrew and Alicia for organizing the event this year, (and for the shirts!) Here's a bit of trivia for you: Members from both bands played this event in 1993 in three different bands; Bluesberry Jam, Pitch Blue Jam & The Crowd. I also heard some mention of funkUs' last appearance at Dave's Down Under (10/23/02), so, hopefully, with some newly infected funki, the spores of funkUs continue to spread... not unlike SARS lately...

Set One: Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Whatever*, Cold Wind Blows*, FYF*, Name That Show*, The Mountain Song*, Mr. Spaceman, Bonnie Lopez*, Out There*, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
Set Two: Run**>Hot Tamales Baby Jam>First Tube>Run**, Release Me*, Drink Heavily*, The Leader>I Wanna Be Sedated, Take a Rest*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
**U.f.O. re-debut.
$Ron & Dave only.
Notes - Our 200th gig!! A milestone achieved and The funkUs Five enjoyed a night full of music as we celebrated with Bluelegs, (achieving their own milestone with their first gig! How appropriate!), and with former members of Refried Confusion and Kynda, their groove was definitely on. The funki enjoyed the tunes and then were treated to a night of music not normally heard, including a re-debut U.f.O. (last played 4/26/02), which led into perhaps our best "First Tube" ever, (so says Alex.) Thanks to everyone there, (again, it is you who make this all worthwhile), and we look forward to the next 200 gigs! Oh, and look for more Bluelegs/funkUs collaborations together. We feel a kindred musical spirit growing...

Saturday, April 12th, 2003 - Tanqueray's
Set One: Mellow*, Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Jump 'n' Jivin', Chicken Strut, Hit The Bricks*, Mr. Spaceman, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>So Lonely>Farmhouse, The Thrill Is Gone, Whatever*, What Would You Say.
Set Two: Roll*, Strobe Light*, Smiley Garcia*, Bouncing Around the Room, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, FYF*, Release Me*, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
Set Three: Bonnie Lopez*, Love Comes Easy*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Low Rider, Mary Had a Little Lamb**, Red House**, When the Circus Comes, Out There*.
*U.f.O.'s.
**w/ Terry Young on guitar.
Notes - Not nearly as exciting as the previous night, but The funkUs Five enjoyed another rousing night downtown underground. The crowd was steady all through the night, and dancing and the usual craziness we've come to expect from Tanqueray's. No A&R interest from The Florida Music Festival attendees, but with our commercially challenged sensibilities, we expected that. Still, it was a great time! A nice warm up for May's downtown concert series: 5 funkUs shows downtown! See you then!

*U.f.O.'s.
$w/ Chris "The Iceman" Raynor on harmonica & vocals.
$$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The funkUs Five downtown underground again! Man, this place has been jumpin', lately. We even had a strong contingent of funki in the house, thanks to The Mayor (our gracious host) and Allen (how does he do that?), plus Mandy, Dave's wife, who celebrated her birthday with us. Combined with some newly infected funki, we had a very large and enthusiastic crowd to play for which makes it so much fun. The Florida Music Festival might've had something to do with it, but there just seemed to be a bunch of music lovers downtown this evening. Just the way we like it! Let's hope tomorrow's show is just as satisfying.

*U.f.O.'s.

Notes - Unbelievable! We totally enjoyed hanging with Skydog and their kickin' groove, but The Fates weren't with The funkUs Five this evening. Next time!

Set One: Mellow*, Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Love Comes Easy*, Wolfman's Brother, Low Rider, Bonnie Lopez*, Friend O'The Devil, Shannon*, Look-A-Py-Py, Strobe Light*.

*U.f.O.'s.
**w/ "Gumbo" teases.
$aborted, not sure why...
Notes - MAN! It's nights like these that make me wonder how we ever get home... The funkUs Five, "winging it", celebrated Ron's birthday on this fine evening with another fun-filled funkUs Friday full of "good f#@!king times", to quote The Mayor. Las Vegas in the house with a visit from our old friend, Danny, and new friend Lindsay brought some Knoxville, TN, (Dave's hometown!), into the scene. Ron manage to do the T-shirt switch, (definitely something to see!), and ended up wearing something he had no right to wear. Hilarious! (She got it back, though.) With spirits flying this high, who wants to ever come down?

*U.f.O.'s.
**more spoon exhibitionism from Claude, standing on the bar.
***w/ Rickey from Coyotes & Towndogs sharing vocal duties.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - Back to The DeLand Aquarium, The funkUs Five enjoyed a rousing night in full DeLand style. Dancing and the usual craziness ensued, and the aquarium went 3-D with fish in front of the stage! We missed our favorite DeLand funki, Sylvan, but with 3 fraternites in the hotel, you can get an idea of what we had to work with. Thanks for our brothers in Coyotes & Towndogs for hanging and enjoying the spirit with us. Another fun for all!

Set One: Mellow*, Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll>Jump 'n' Jivin', Sing a Simple Song>Born Under a Bad Sign, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Smiley Garcia*, Shannon*, Turn On Your Lovelight.

*U.f.O.'s.
**w/ Jeff Willey on vocals & harmonica.
$Ron & Dave only.
Notes - The funkUs Five celebrated their 3 year anniversary of playing at Kitty O'Shea's by taking a low key approach, not really mentioning it. Instead, the music was played as the funkUs Friday spirit was present, and another landmark evening passed unawares... Thanks for 3 great years to Rob and the Kitty crew!!

*U.f.O.'s.
**Ron bounces himself to the ground.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - Part two of The funkUs Five's Tanqueray soire, and top the previous night, we did! A new friend, Jamie from Canada was there BOTH nights for two full evenings of funkUs, and Melanie and Sean came to shake the Langerado blues with Dave, (who also couldn't make it). Instead, we made our own scene with continuous dancing all night long, many people staying for the ENTIRE show, and a new development, standing ovations! Wow! What a night!

Friday, March 7th, 2003 - Tanqueray's

Set Three: Stir It Up**, On Broadway**, Bonnie Lopez*, Little Wing>Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Release Me*, What's Wrong With You*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
**w/o Dave.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The funkUs Five return to downtown underground, (last played here 10/19/02). Again, it was a most welcome return as we ran into some familiar Tanqueray faces and played to a house full of appreciative new faces, (and resident funki, Allen, too!), enjoying a particularly full night of strong music. Playing downtown seems to bring out the best in us! It's gonna be hard to top this one...

Saturday, March 1st, 2003 - The Side Bar - Gainesville, FL
Set One: Look-A-Py-Py, Shannon*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Love Comes Easy*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Bonnie Lopez*, FYF*, Whatever*, Mr. Spaceman, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
Set Two: Chicken Strut/The Mayor Theme Song, Strobe Light*, Drink Heavily*, Release Me*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side**>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Smiley Garcia*, The Mountain Song*, Out There*, Take a Rest*#.
*U.f.O.'s.
**Dave goes into the crowd and recruits more dancers.
#Ron & Dave only.
Notes - The funkUs Five invaded Gainesville for their first foray north to find a GREAT music room that hosts GREAT bands, and we felt quite at home on a very comfortable stage and among the very cool staff, (Thanks Scott, Angela and Jeff!) It's just a shame that very few came. Nevertheless, we had a strong performance and managed a really fun time for those that did, hopefully infecting some new funki in the process. Thanks to Ori of InJam Productions for bringing us up, to Scott for having us, and Brandy who did some street team work for us, (wish you could've been there!) Huge kudos to Rachel and The Mayor, without who we could not have managed. We so needed that funki love! Ah, well... Next time? You bet!

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Drink That Bottle Down, Strobe Light*, Mellow*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Born Under a Bad Sign, Look-A-Py-Py, Drink Heavily*$, Friend O'The Devil, Sample In A Jar, Mr. Spaceman, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
Set Two: on the way...
*U.f.O.'s.
$for our 3rd Great Guiness Toast.
Notes - The funkUs Five with Uncle Jesse on percussion and appearances by Chris "The Iceman" Raynor for another fun filled evening where we just couldn't stop playing! The result was two power sets chocked full of original music for a small, but always appreciative crowd with The Mayor presiding, (note: the ever-present Allen & Shannon finally met The Mayor!). I'm gonna have to listen to the CDs, (thanks to Cat and Uncle Jesse!), to get the set lists right, though, because at some point during the second set, we let the moment overtake us and lost all track. Hopefully that means we had a REALLY great time... I just can't remember!

$Claude stand on a table demonstrating his "prowess"...
Notes - The funkUs Five return to the DeLand Aquarium with the grandest stage set ever! Bubbles (thanks to Amber and Chris!), fish, and lights create a crazy spectacle, (including Claude and his magic uh...), which has really turned into a community effort that may have changed the stage at The Artisan Inn forever! We'll see, I guess. It was a happy return and we'd definitely been away too long. How we enjoy basking in the spirit of such wonderful people!

$Billie Jean teases
Notes - The funkUs Five with Uncle Jesse on percussion. Man, did things get a little crazy or what? All I remember is Adam switching shirts with the lovely Billie Jo, who walked away with the first officially signed funkUs T-shirt. And we know she can wear it SOOOO well. Noah got his birthday request in, and we even debuted a new song. First of many, peeps, as the funkUs grows on...

*U.f.O.'s.
$improvised "gospel revival", Ron looking for a woman who can "hang with a brother all night long."
Notes - funkUs was seven strong with Chris "The Iceman" Raynor and Uncle Jesse joining the funki ranks in a landmark evening for the band both musically and spiritually. In other words, the jamming reached new levels that surprised everyone in the room, including the band itself taking the music to places unplanned. And the best part, we got it on tape! One of the highlights of the evening included an interesting request. Brenda from Take One Marketing & Promotions handed Ron a small pebble. "This is a request," she said. Looking at the rock revealed a single word: "Hope". Pretty cool...

Set Two: Bonnie Lopez*, Release Me*, Cold Wind Blows*, Friend O'The Devil, Shannon*, Red House, Whatever*.

*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The funkUs Five return to Kitty's, joined by new percussionist in town, Uncle Jesse from Atlanta, (...too much fun, bro! We'll have to do it all again soon...) With JB's show at The HOB, the place packed up VERY nicely including new friends from Jacksonville who while grooving to the music made quite an impression on the band, (check out Keith Jones's awesome caraciture of the band below! Dig that spirit! Thanks!), and we would've played all night if Mojo's finger didn't explode. (OUCH!) Many of The funki and faces we're just starting to recognize enjoyed the vibes as well, and, as always, the party stepped up when The Mayor started kickin' it. We even had a visitation from one of the Ghosts of Bands Past with Dave Van Houtte from Pitch Blue Jam! Wild! This really felt like the first true funkUs Friday of the year, and proof yet again that the magic flows and the spirit rules like nowhere else at Kitty's, forever home.

Set Two: Strobe Light*, Whatever*, Love Comes Easy*, Sample In A Jar, Spacey Jam>Hit The Bricks*, Feelin' Alright>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>Feelin' Alright, Love Me Like A Man$$, Cold Wind Blows*, You Enjoy Myself (Part II).
Set Three: Release Me*, The Mountain Song*, Bonnie Lopez*, Sexx Laws, Out There*, Tube>First Tube>Tube, I Wanna Be Sedated.
*U.f.O.'s.
$w/o Ron, changing a string.
$$sung by different unknown woman who belted out this Bonnie Raitt song.
Notes - Ah, good ol' Scruffy's. The curse remained intact for The funkUs Five, though no one was towed this time! ;^) Plagued with electrical problems, (a new one for us), we were conviced we were going to blow the circuits this night after a couple of "brown outs" during the Farmhouse medley. Somehow, we made it through the evening and had an enjoyable night of music with the staff partying harder than some of the patrons! A couple of mystery guest on the mic surprised us, and The funki made an impressive late showing, in typical funki fashion. Even Bongo Willie and The Mayor were there! Thanks, all. As always, you are the ones who make this so fun.

$acoustic set w/ Ron, Dave & Jim.
$$J.F. Bedard from Cirque du Soleil sitting in on the bass for Mojo.
*U.f.O.'s.
**improvised blues.
#Dave only, joined briefly by funki columnist, Steve Mason.
Notes - "We're back... almost!" That was the running joke of the evening since Adam missed the first set, (driving an hour and a half to get his missing kick drum pedal!), forcing the acoustic set, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Plus, Mojo wasn't there. Special thanks to longtime friend J.F., who filled in so aptly allowing us to continue the funkUs tradition of original jams and even threw some new Police, Ohio Players, moe. and Oysterhead into the fray. All in all, it was fun start to a new year. Speaking of which... Happy New Year! Yet another fun year on the horizon, and there's a REALLY positive vibe in the air. Great things are bound to happen this year!
