Keeping track of set lists was a practice held by the band from 1999 to 2005.
NOTE: U.f.O.'s - Unidentified funkUs Originals.

Set$: New Speedway Boogie, Friend O'The Devil, Bonnie Lopez*, Smiley Garcia*, FYF*, Cumberland Blues, Dark Hollow, When the Circus Comes, How Blue Can You Get*$$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$w/ Tom Constanten on piano.
$$w/ Carter Everett of Bluelegs on guitar.
Notes - The core 4 was joined once again by original Grateful Dead keyboardist, Tom Constanten for another rousing and historic night! We're all sure to share this one with the grandkids! Though sparsely attended, fun was had by all in attendance as we showcased some of our favorite Dead songs and gave a preview of what's cooking on our next CD. (Shhhh! Don't tell!) Bluelegs started the night off with a STRONG set, setting the stage for a complete musical experience, and Dave joined the band for their last few songs. Carter returned the favor for our last blues romp, as well. Great fun! Sorry you missed it! We ran out of time in the end, but we were happy with our musical offering, which TC described as "karmically pure." How very true... Let's do it again, eh? And, so was the last gig of 2004, an incredible year for us!

Set: Release Me*, Bonnie Lopez*$, FYF*$$, Sleep*$$, The Mountain Song*$$, Everybody's Right*$$, Smiley Garcia*, Turn On Your Lovelight$$$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$w/ Jason Herold of Kynda on percussion.
$$w/ Clay Watson of The Legendary JC's on trombone.
$$$w/ Tom Constanten on piano, Clay Watson, Bunky of Mohave on trumpet & Howard Mall of Snack Daddy on sax.
Notes - The core 4 wrapped up our SIXTH appearance at the Hard Rock Live for a special Xmas Jambando, who offered a CD compilation of a year of shows and brought Tom Constanten in for the occasion. What a show! Mohave kicked things off appropriately with their good-time, and sometimes politically charged, Americana and ended with a special Christmas offering. Then Bluelegs ripped up a strong set, having us dancing to "Hey Pocky Way" before we went on. Kudos to Jason on percussion and the improptu horn section for joining us for some fun! And, of course, special thanks to TC for the rousing "Turn On Your Lovelight" that had everyone dancing and smiling. Great fun! Lastly, TC performed a sweet solo set, and during "Dark Star", Toni Brown & Friends formed. Dave joined the fray for her All-star set with also included Carter Everett and Jay Camphire from Bluelegs, Tony Roman from Mobius & The Goldminers, Bing Futch from Mohave, Frank Registrato & Jason Herold from Kynda & Charles Stansell. Even Ron stepped out for a huge "New Speedway Boogie" to end the show. What an amazing time as Jambando pulled it off again!

*U.f.O.'s.
$half w/o Ron, changing a string.
$$Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney in Dave's place.
$$$Ron only, with help.
Notes - We'll chalk this one up for The core 4 1/2, as we were visited by Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney, always a funki and great friend, having joined us from playing onstage with Skin & Bones at Tanqueray's earlier that evening. This was our first appearance at our home venue since August 27th, and June 18th before that. In almost 5 years at Kitty's, never have we had such a long hiatus! Having been gone so long, we actually didn't know what to expect, but Kitty's never disappoints as the crowd was warm, friendly, familiar and receptive, and Rob and the staff were onhand to enjoy a shot or two with the band. The good times had returned, and we were happy to be a part of it all once again! Let's not put it off so long again, eh?
|
| |
Set*: Shakedown Street>Tales of Brave Ulysses, Rabbit Hole Soul, Bakin'>Third Stone from the Sun>Bakin', Nowhere, NV>Shakedown Street*>Hot 'Lanta, Smoke Two Joints, A Day in the Life, White Room.
*Ron, Dave and Adam join members of Kynda (Tony Hume, Pete Orenstein, Jason Herold), Bluelegs (Ryan Walsh, Jay Camphire, Trent Spears), Bing Futch of Mohave & Toni Brown for Jambando's first All-Star jam.
**"Ease on Down the Road" teases.
Notes - Members of funkUs, Kynda, Bluelegs, Mohave & Toni Brown joined forces to form an 11-piece conglomeration and called themselves the Jambando All-Stars. With VERY little practice, we managed to have a great time playing the favorite tunes we've never played before... EVER! It was risky, but the payoff was tremendous as many danced the night away. (It was a healthy crowd for a Wednesday!) A HUGE thanks to Stephanie and Happy for serving the bands and crew a fine Thanksgiving feast, bringing the holiday spirit to the family. It's a beautiful thing... All in all, a spectacular and fun evening that will be hard pressed to match. I think we're up to the challenge!

$w/ Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney in for Ron, running late...
Notes - Emotions ran deep as the core 4 participated in a HUGE community reach-out for the blues as Wall St. Plaza presented The 1st Annual Bluesfest & BBQ, celebrating the birth of The Orange Blossom Blues Society, dedicated to preserving, presenting, & representing the blues in Orlando. What a perfect day for some blues in the afternoon! Highlights of the day, which started at 2PM, were numerous with my performances by The Revival, Burnin' Vernon & Wild Blue Yonder, The Midnight Ramblers, The Red Eye Express, funkUs, The Smokin' Torpedoes, The Soul Cactus Review and The Annual Houseshaker Reunion that ended with a stage full of great friends getting to screw around in the heart of downtown. We had a blast!! Let's do it all again, eh?

##Mohave's Bing Futch on vocals.
###Ron only, with help.
Notes - Wow!! Do Phil and The Songwriters Showcases of America know how to throw a party, or what? For the 4th year, The SSA pulled off another great downtown festival, featuring over 85 acts on 16 different stages, in beautiful, historic DeLand. With another tremendous turnout this year, this little town's annual music festival is just getting bigger and better every year. Our main stage performance was welcomed warmly by a very appreciative crowd, including the Daytona funki along with some self-professed newbies... Then, we were off to The Artisan Inn for another rousing set and an festival ending jam, (over 2 hours!!), w/ The Coyotes & Towndogs that is fast becoming a DOMF tradition. Thanks to Rickey Dickens from The Revival Band and Mohave's Bing Futch for sitting in as well. Fun stuff, fellas!! All in all, it was a day and night full of music, friends old and new, and that wonderful spirit of community that feeds us time and time again. Kudos to Phil, Dana, Michelle and all The SSA's volunteer staff. We'll definitely see you next year!

Set Two: Cumberland Blues, Out There*, Everybody's Right*, FYF*, How Blue Can You Get, When the Circus Comes, Sleep*, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
*U.f.O.'s.
$w/ Mike O'Brien from The Burlington Breeze Project on guitar.
Notes - The core 4's return to Daytona Beach, starting to feel more like home each trip. We really enjoy the receptive enthusiasm and appreciate listeners in the crowd, and always love to see the good times that spread from the vibe, (largely originating from The Daytona funki corner, methinks! Thanks all!) With this appearance, we had a surprise opening act, The Antics, who treated the crowd to a punk romp, reminiscent of the early Clash. (Love that "Radio" song, fellas!) Dig it! A strange combination for sure, but a real treat, eh? And, speaking of treats, we were again treated to a guest sit-in from The Burlington Breeze Project's Mike O'Brien on guitar, who's tasty licks are always a treat to hear... (adds to the flavor rock, you know...) That 12-minute blues romp through "Born Under a Bad Sign" was TOO MUCH fun! With hospitality like that, we just have to keep coming back for more... Until then!

Jambando @ Hard Rock Live, Universal Studios, CityWalk
with Kynda, Toni Brown w/ The Goldminers & Sonar
Set: Roll*, Out There*, Sleep*, Hit The Bricks*, Love Comes Easy*, Name That Show*, The Mountain Song*, Everybody's Right*.
E**: Man Smart Women Smarter>Aiko Aiko>I Wanna Be Sedated, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright.
*U.f.O.'s.
**end jam featuring Kynda, funkUs, Andrew Ranieri of Sonar & Toni Brown.
Notes - The core 4 and funkUs' FIFTH appearance at Hard Rock Live this year!! Who'da thunk it, eh? Another great night of music as new guys, Sonar kick off the night with their melodic improv jams that seemed to go over well to an enthusiatic crowd, then Toni Brown brought the country jams with The Goldminers, warming the crowd nicely for a funkUs foray into the flavor rock. Then Kynda took over with their extended jams featuring only TWO songs... very nice! The cream of the evening was a long-overdue two full band jam, (reminiscent of The Fringe Jambando), with a surprise tribute to the late Johnny Ramone that surprised everyone. Another night full of music and fun for all, and we enjoyed ever minute as we hope you all did... Thanks to the Hard Rock Live and crew for letting us throw these parties, and we'll have more to come! Keep up that great support for live music!

*U.f.O.'s.
#w/ Carter Everett from Bluelegs on guitar.
$w/ Tom Constanten from the Grateful Dead on piano.
Notes - What an incredible evening!! Continuing the spirit from the art show the day before, (did you catch Les & Toni's 30 year multi-media retrospective at The Hard Rock Vault?), The core 4 of funkUs were extremely honored to host "An Evening of Grateful Dead Music" with our newest friend, Tom Constanten, legendary Grateful Dead keyboardist, and our great friends Toni Brown & The Goldminers. Toni kicked off the night strong with a great set of music and sit-in's a-plenty, including Corey Dwyer of Crazy Fingers from South Florida and Gary Kroman, famed and talented Dead and Relix artist. (There was a point early on when the stage was so full of music and musicians, and all I could think was, "Already??") Then TC treated the crowd with a beautiful set which included an incredible "Dark Star". What a treat! We then got our shot to play some classic Dead with an original member, (TC played with the Dead from 1968 to 1970 on legendary albums like Anthem of the Sun, Aoxomoxoa, Live Dead and Workingman's Dead, leaving for reasons he said he states in his book, Between Rock and Hard Places: A Musical Autobiodyssey.) It all made for a night we'll not soon forget. It was magic... and one of the best and most appreciative crowds we've played to in a long while, including The Mayor surrounded by his many constituents, (SO great to see Bongo Willie, Alex and so many of The funki in the house! From as far as Ft. Myers to St. Petersburg to Daytona Beach, no less!!). Thanks to everyone for sharing this moment with us and making it a great evening, and HUGE thanks to Les & Toni for throwing a great 3-day party, and we look forward to many more exciting events like this through Jambando and Jam 'Til Dawn Music, bringing families together at last! MAN, can we do this again sometime?
|

set lists coming...
Notes - The core 4 were back at Kitty's for the first time since 11/22/02, with surprise guest and good friends from West Palm Beach, Meredosia, (who last played with us at Kitty's on 9/6/02). Meredosia rocked it out, and all in all, it was a fun and comfortable return home after our longest absence from Kitty's EVER! It's so nice to hang with friends, you know? Unfortunately, (brace yourselves, folks), it looks like we won't get to play at Kitty's again until December... but it's for a good cause, peeps! We should have a new CD upon our return, and will look forward to another great year of funkUs Fridays in 2005. In the meantime, look out for The Ron & Dave Experience featuring Ron and Dave from funkUs with Joe and J.F. from The Cirque du Soleil Band to tide us all over during the hiatus.

Notes - The core 4's debut in Daytona Beach, as we get back into the gig-swing after our two month break. What a fun first club show back! These cats in Daytona sure appreciate the music, and it's always a pleasure to play for such an enthusiastic crowd, (...James was tearin' it up!) Thanks all!! You guys ROCK!!! We'll see you again real soon...

*U.f.O.'s.
$w/ Jason Herold of Kynda on percussion.
$$w/ Frank Registrato of Kynda on percussion.
Notes - Depsite not having quite as successful a turnout as previous Jambandos, The core 4's first appearance, (and funkUs' 4th this year), at The Hard Rock Live was another musical feast and a great way to come back from a 2 month break, (...thank Hurricane Charley for extending our vacation a bit longer than planned.) Toni Brown's return with a backing band combined The Goldminers' good-time vibe with Toni's great original, Dead-influenced songs, (including a few nods to The Dead themselves), showing great things on the horizon with this new collaboration. Then Bluelegs, pounded out an hour long jam of musical bliss with special guests Trent Spears on the sax and Scramble Campbell! The core 4 stepped up with some fun, including a few nods to the now-defuct Phish and Kynda helping on percussion throughout the set, as we get more and more comfortable on the big stage. Finally, Kynda, fresh from their West Coast excursion, brought back stories for their fans complete with stage props and another Scramble treat. It all made for a great experience that was enjoyed by the couple of hundred in attendance. HUGE thanks for the continued support, and we'll see you all again in September!

$w/ Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney on guitar and vocals, in Ron's place.
$$Ron only, with help from the band AND audience.
Notes - The core 4 perform another "originals-heavy" night as we continue our evolution and come into our own space... FINALLY! Jim "Mad Dog" Mahoney showed up to treat everyone to a fun cover by The Weary Boys, but working through the original material was the order for the evening, and much appreciated by the warm audience, which included the lovely Toni Brown, who also opened the show. (Thanks, Toni!) Kudos to the guys up front who've taken to shouting "Motherf$#!king funkUs!!", a catcall we could definitely get used to! This was our last show until August, so we'll see you in a few months, eh? Oh, and good news from Bonnaroo... not all the shrooms were bad!

$Ron & Dave only.
$$Ron only, then the full band joins in... a first!
Notes - The funkUs Five return home to Kitty's and show up as quite a different band as we decided to put our best feet forward playing every original song we know... almost! It made for a nice vibe for the band and all in attendance, including some funki faithful that we haven't seen in a while. Hopefully, it was a fun treat for all. It sure was for us! Thanks also to the lovely Toni Brown filling in some music between sets. What a fun night! We might get used to this!

Thursday, June 17th, 2004 -
Jambando @ Hard Rock Live, Universal Studios, CityWalk
with Kynda, Bluelegs, Mohave & Toni Brown
Set: Whatever*, Name That Show*, FYF*, Love Comes Easy*, Smiley Garcia*, The Mountain Song*$, Strobe Light*$$>Superstition$$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$w/ Trent Spears on sax and Clay Watson on trombone.
$$including members from all the bands.
Notes - Another successful Jambando, and that makes The funkUs Five's third appearance at The Hard Rock Live this year! I think all the bands are really getting into the swing of these shows as this one seemed to be the best gathering of music yet! Toni kicked it all off with her sweet Rabbit Hole Soul and Mohave introduced themselves with their great, good time jams and eclectic instrumentation, (not a guitar in sight!) Bluelegs had a strong set, their best yet, and even invited Dave onstage for a sit-in, continuing the Jambando cross-pollination traditions, and then Kynda paraded their way onto the stage. Fun stuff!! As the headliners, we pulled out all the stops and put together a crack horn section featuring Trent Spears, Clay Watson with Howard and Bunky from Mohave. The mayhem began as the rest of the bands filtered onstage at an unplanned point during the disco trip in "Strobe Light", and it all seemed to organically flow into a record-breaking 16 man jam! ("It's in C!!!" Well, maybe not...) This was the most enjoyable Jambando yet, and we hope everyone had as much fun as we did. Thanks to The Hard Rock for letting us throw these parties, and HUGE thanks to everyone who supported the show. We may actually keep getting to do this, eh?

*U.f.O.'s.
**joined by... uh, someone?
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The core 4 squeaked by this one, but with a much better turnout than last night, we managed to have some fun with those in attendance, some who stayed all night long! Despite the technical difficulties, (let's see... a blown tube, a broken snare, a broken string, a blown voice... wasn't there a full moon recently?), we pulled off another fun show... I think...
|

Friday, June 4th, 2004 - Tanqueray's
Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Let Love Rule, Love Comes Easy*, Hit the Bricks*, Bonnie Lopez*, Shadows in the Rain.

Set Three: Turn On Your Lovelight>Fly>Got My Mojo Workin', Release Me*, Smiley Garcia*, Sleep*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - I don't know, man... Was it the rain? A dead downtown?? I suppose we played well enough, but The core 4 trudged through a difficult night with nothing to work with both onstage and off. (We were fine when Adam caught his 15th wind...) Sometimes, you gotta do some heavy lifting, eh? Let's hope tomorrow gets back to the usual mayhem we've come to expect and love from downtown underground...

*U.f.O.'s.

#joined by Kynda and segued into their set.
##including all members from funkUs and Kynda plus Rion Smith from Florganism on percussion.
Notes - The 2nd Annual Fringe Jambando with The funkUs Five and another great showing of Orlando's jam scene, (and this time even Kynda made it!) Another grand success, we outdrew last year's show, (hopefully and indication that the scene is indeed coming together as the bands have been doing for each Jambando.) From coast to coast, jam fans came and spent the whole day with us and all in all, everything was just perfect... even the weather! Another successful gathering of great music and great people! Thanks, everybody!! All the bands had GREAT sets, and a special thanks goes to Toni & Russel for keeping the flow going between bands. What a treat! My favorite part had to be the birth of "KyndUs", the ten-headed monster jam amalgamation and our unintentional tribute to Phish. What a jam!! Kudos, again, to Lisa Jageler from Orlando Edge Productions for letting us have this great day, and Chris the Sound God, (who we didn't make it easy for!), for his stellar job accomodating all the bands and the mondo jam. Quite a feat! Who's to say when we can pull off something like that again, but the next Jambando is only a month away!

Notes - The core 4 (minus one) continue their downtown tradition at Scruffy's with special guest Toni Brown treating an enthusiastic crowd to a little pre-Jambando party, or a "prelude" as Ron put it... just a taste of what was to come the next day. HUGE kudos to Kevin & Scott helping us out with their own kind of fun at the door, and "EZ E", who galloped in on his white horse and allowed us to be ourselves... again!

Notes - The funkUs Five return to Daytona Beach! Quite a night! First, we had a Twilight Zone moment as we left an empty club and came back to a room full of lesbian ice hockey players... really! Then Mike from The Burlington Breeze Project came onstage for a 4 guitar romp through some old favorites. In between sets, The Halifax Country Band added their flavor to the night pulling out some Violent Femmes, among other cool songs. Kudos to Phil from The SSA for hanging out and thanks again to the whole BBP crew for hanging with us! Good times, peeps! It's so nice to have a fun venue to visit in Daytona... See you next time!!

Ah, Underground Bluz... we hardly knew ya... apparently...

Notes - The core 4 continue to enjoy the downtown underground vibe as the Jager shots were lined up in front of us. Great fun with a great crowd of new faces, some family and old friends. As for The Florida Music Festival? Well... I guess they just did their thing, and we did ours. 'Nuff said...

*U.f.O.'s.
$w/o Ron, changing a string.
$$w/ J.F. Bedard from The Cirque du Soleil on bass.
Notes - The core 4 return to the downtown underground and with The Florida Music Festival going on, we were very happy to hang with those who chose to party with us over the endless choices of music, some all night long. Family and friends in the house, (from as far as Chicago!), really made the evening for us, including a visit from J.F. on bass, and the music was "spot on", so we're told. Let's do it again all again tomorrow!

Saturday, April 10th, 2004 - "It's All About The Love" Fest - Holopaw, FL
Soundcheck w/ Refried Confusion: Why Don't We Do It In The Road*.
Sit-in w/ Bluelegs: Down & Out in NYC**>Cissy Strut**.
*Dave on guitar.
**Dave on guitar, Trent Spears on sax.
Notes - We would like to congratulate Scramble & Shay Campbell on their beautiful union and incredible wedding gethering, and though funkUs didn't perform, Dave Mann attended and was invited to share in the musical gift presented to the happy couple, a gift that included the historic reunion of Refried Confusion, and a marathon, late-night Florganism set! It was a special moment celebrating a special couple and family that we are so happy to be a part of.

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Cruel Corrine, Love Comes Easy*, Let Love Rule, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright.
Set Two: Cold Shot, Mellow*, Mr. Spaceman, Dead Flowers>Ball & Chain>Ring of Fire, When the Circus Comes, Drink Heavily*, Bonnie Lopez*, Turn On Your Lovelight>Fly>Got My Mojo Workin'.
Set Three: Many Miles>Mr. Cab Driver>Truckin'>Many Miles, Look-A-Py-Py, Sleep*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - The funkUs Five play for a strangely empty room at Kitty's for a Good funkUs Friday, (I think we were victim of a "musical depression" in the area, due to what was going on at Scramble & Shay Campbell's wedding down the road!), but we managed a fun night of some good music regardless to make up for the lack of audience contribution that we so enjoy. On a side note, funkUs Fridays are getting rarer these days, so be sure to keep an eye out and catch them while you can. They always prove to be unique experiences that we never quite manage to recreate anywhere else. Must be something in the water... or beer rather! Don't miss the next one!

with Ruby James, Soul Power and others
Set: Everybody's Right*, Smiley Garcia*, FYF*, Bonnie Lopez*, Love Comes Easy*, Out There*.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - "Who's a good doggie?" The funkUs Five go to the dogs. Short and sweet... and hey, Savannah from Real Radio 104.1 FM Monsters in the Morning was there! She even signed our mailing list... Kudos to Casey from Casey's on Central for putting on a great event!

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Let Love Rule, Mellow*, Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Cardova, Love Comes Easy*, Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Hit the Bricks*, Friend O'The Devil, What Would You Say.
Set Two: Name That Show*, Run*, Out There*, Bouncing Around the Room, Bonnie Lopez*, Smiley Garcia*, The Leader, Look-A-Py-Py, Turn On Your Lovelight>Fly>Got My Mojo Workin'.
Set Three: Little Wing, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse.
*U.f.O.'s.
Notes - Hmm... Seems like The core 4 just played here. (We did! It's a Scruffy's record for a returning band, I'm sure!) Always a fun time, this night quickly became interesting as table dancing erupted in the second set, causing Dave to play that "Lovelight" solo just a little bit longer, which paved the way for much dancing the rest of the night. Shout out to returning old friends... of 10 years and more! Also, HUGE thanks to new funki Pete and Regan for documenting the evening as well! We're definitely digging the spirit! We return to Scruffy's in May for The Fringe Festival. See you then!

Saturday, March 27th, 2004 - Kitty O'Shea's
Notes - This ended up NOT being a funkUs show, and not quite a Friends of funkUs gig either. Instead, it turned into The Ron & Dave Experience featuring members of The Cirque du Soleil band which is a fun, unrehearsed side project you can only find at Kitty's, (if you look for it), that's always open to where the vibe may take it. For instance, Carter Everett from Bluelegs showed up to jam! Fun stuff, peeps! Look out for the next one.

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Been Down So Long, Fever, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Chicken Strut/The Mayor Song$, Hit the Bricks*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, When the Circus Comes*, Love Comes Easy*, Bonnie Lopez*, The Leader, Turn On Your Lovelight>Got My Mojo Workin'.
Set Two: Look-A-Py-Py, Sample In A Jar, Friend O'The Devil, Shannon*, Farmhouse>No Woman No Cry>Beast of Burden>So Lonely>Farmhouse, Ripple, Stir It Up>The Tide is High>Stir It Up, What Would You Say, Sexx Laws, Sleep*.
Set Three: Cissy Strut>Cardova>It's Your Thing>Love Rollercoaster, Love Her With A Feelin', Darlin' Darlin' Darlin', FYF*, First Tube>Tube, Low Rider.
*U.f.O.'s.
$for The Mayor.
Notes - The core 4 are making Scruffy's a habit and have decided to make this the official workout space for the core of the group, so from this day forward, Scruffy's gigs will be exclusively core 4. (Nothing personal, of course... just tightening up the middle, ya know?) The Mayor, after a bit of an absence, strutted his stuff with his usual Mayoral panache and it was great to be grooving with old friends and funki... smiles everywhere! (Where was Recca, Reiner??? Even Alex showed!) This was a loose and fun show, as the glow from last night's Jambando was still subsiding. Ahhhhh...

Friday, March 19th, 2004 -
Jambando @ Hard Rock Live, Universal Studios, CityWalk
with Kynda, Bluelegs, & Toni Brown plus live art by Scramble Campbell
Dave sit-in with Toni Brown/Kynda: Eyes of the World.
Set: Out There*, Strobe Light*, Run*, Sleep*, FYF*, Name That Show*, Smiley Garcia*, Everybody's Right*.
End of the night jam#: Shakedown Street.
*U.f.O.'s.
#including members from all the bands.
Notes - What a magical evening! The stars aligned and everything fell into place for a perfect night! Truly one of Orlando's landmark gatherings with an Orlando Weekly cover story and radio appearances in Winter Park & Melbourne to get the momentum going, 1000 jamband fans came to support Orlando's burgeoning jam scene and a grand party was had by all as The Hard Rock Live let us do it our way, jam style! The night featured strong performance from all the bands & Scramble Campbell, (whose creation now belongs to our own Dave Mann, coincidentally the event's organizer), some cross-pollinating sit-ins and an EXCELLENT jam at the end. It was all captured on video by Orange TV, photographed by countless people, and with the HRL's soundboard mix by the talented Brian Robertson AND Pete and Billy's audience tapes, this is the most documented event in our careers, so we definitely plan on sharing with everyone! Keep an eye on the Jambando website. Huge thanks to everyone for showing and enjoying an event designed for all of us, fans and bandmembers alike, to share in the spirit. Even the afterparty at Reilly's was classic as Dave continues his Jambando tradition of jamming after the show, this time with friends in The Shaun Rounds Blues Band. Let's do it all again, eh?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2004 - WPRK 91.5FM - Rollins College, Winter Park, FL
Songs played on air: Strobe Light*, Love Comes Easy*, Smiley Garcia*, FYF*, Hit The Bricks*, Bonnie Lopez*, Out There*, Everybody's Right*$.
*U.f.O.'s.
$Mojo breaks a string, not finished (ran out of time)...
Notes - Further promoting Jambando, The funkUs Five made their first full radio debut playing a full set on the air for WPRK Comes Alive, a weekly series. Plagued by fire alarms and technical snafu's a-plenty, (resulting in a 20 minute late start), it's amazing that this happened at all! HUGE thanks to Asa and Selena for supporting local music so awesomely. It was a blast! "Are they still playing?"
|
| |
Tuesday, March 16th, 2004 - WFIT 89.5FM - Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL
Songs played on air: Take a Rest*$, Smiley Garcia*$.

$Ron & Dave only.
Notes - Ron and Dave headed out to Melbourne and played a couple songs and a chat over the airwaves, thanks to Jon Adams and his very cool jamband show, Jazz with a Groove. (funkUs played in Melbourne on 9/8/01.) It's all for the Jambando, people.

Notes - Now that's more like it! The funkUs Five's first foray into Daytona Beach was a great success and a ton of fun! With smiling faces everywhere and a crowd very responsive to the funkUs groove, nothing but a good time was had by all. A shout goes out to Casey and Julie making the trip from home, and a big thanks to James, Geoff and new friends from The Burlington Breeze Project crew for hanging with us. We're definitely looking forward to our return in May. See you then!

#Madman Matt on cowbell.
Notes - I think The funkUs Five is just gonna pretend like this didn't happen, okay? Okay. Moving on... HUGE thanks to the lovely Toni Brown saving the day, and I seem to remember Madman Matt taking cowbell duties... It's all a haze, really. Kinda like a bad dream... How's that for a 4 year celebration? When's the next gig?

*U.f.O.'s.
**by special birthday request.
$Ron only, with help.
$$Ron & Dave only, with help.
Notes - The madness ensued with The core 4 downtown underground. With some "repeat offenders," the spirit from the previous night remained intact, and the rowdiness and crazy energy continued. This great crowd entertained the band as much as we did them, it seemed. Going with the flow of the night, we leaned a little more to the blues than usual, and dusted off some old faithfuls that felt oh, so good. Thanks to the lovely Toni Brown for entertaining the crowd during our first set break for us again. It's all in the name of music, people. Hope you had as much fun as we did! And we maybe even had a little more fun than usual, thanks to the guys up front feeding Ron Crown Royal shots all night. (I hope they come back...) Actually, kudos to all the many newly infected funki this fine night. We hope you all keep coming back, because you made it one fun and memorable weekend! Looking forward to many more...

*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron only, with help.
Notes - The core 4 enjoy a rousing homecoming at our favorite hangout downtown underground, (last played here 9/27/03). Truly and inspired evening, the audience was feeding crazy energy to the room and stage. It was downright rowdy, people! Just how we like it! Somehow, through it all, the remaining shelves remained intact. Maybe we can get them tomorrow night... Oh, and just what WAS that smell? Huge thanks to new friends for coming out to record the experience. Madman Matt was working hard, too, getting those intimate shots that he does so well. Thanks for making it so much fun all! Let's do it all again tomorrow, eh?

*U.f.O.'s.
**Ron starts solo, band joins in.
Notes - What? Friday the 13th? No WONDER! What with Adam forgetting his drum pedals, the band starting late and Dave and Jim's cars almost getting ticketed, it was kind of a freaky Friday for The funkUs Five. (Maybe it was the Glayva?) The funki and the new faces in the crowd seemed to enjoy themselves, though, and we got a real treat as the some of The ORIGINAL funki showed up! Bongo Willie, Alex and Steve in the house!

Friday, February 6th, 2004 - Kitty O'Shea's

*U.f.O.'s.
**prematurely ended, not sure why...
***Happy Birthday, Bob.
Notes - The funkUs Five have another fun night at Kitty's. Sparsely attended, it was a night for The funki faithful to enjoy. It was just us, and we saw that it was good! Or as Ron put it, "We did a pretty good job, considering the circumstances," (the circumstances having something to do with the Jager, methinks).

Friday, January 30th, 2004 - Kitty O'Shea's

*U.f.O.'s.
$w/ Corey Dywer on sax.
Notes - The funkUs Five is back at Kitty's for the first of three consecutive Fridays. Just like old times! The place was full of golfers in town and Allen's crew represented The funki camp for another enjoyable evening. Very late in the evening, we were joined by Corey Dwyer from Crazy Fingers in South Florida on saxophone for a treat. Thanks to Toni Brown for draggin' him down! Good times, people... good times... (By the way, have you noticed more people calling for "Freebird" lately? I can't figure that out...)

Set One: Ron's Choice Bflat Shuffle/Let the Good Times Roll, Mellow*, Feelin' Alright>Walk on the Wild Side>You Can't Always Get What You Want>Feelin' Alright, Smiley Garcia*, Love Comes Easy*, Wolfman's Brother, Turn On Your Lovelight.

Set Three: Ripple, Look-A-Py-Py, Bouncing Around The Room, How Blue Can You Get, Shannon*, The Mountain Song*, I Wanna Be Sedated.
*U.f.O.'s.
**Ron & Dave only.
Notes - The core 4 makes a rare appearance (last played 5/24/03) at a club we haven't played at since 5/10/03, and it turned out to be a most welcome homecoming on all fronts! This was one of the most receptive crowds we've had in a while, and we're pretty sure some new funki were infected as people continue to discover one of Orlando's most enduring bands. The ever-enthusiastic funki Jeff made sure of that! (Thanks, bro!) HUGE thanks to the lovely Toni Brown for keeping them greased during our set break with her sweet, soulful acoustic set. (Donovan and Dylan? Gotta love it!) Requests ruled the night as we filled more requests than I can ever remember... because they were requesting funkUs songs! Some old Ron & Dave Acoustical Experience fans made us dust off some old favorites, as well. The crowd really fed the inspired jams, and danced and grooved the night away making the whole experience totally enjoyable for all involved. When do we get to play here again?

*U.f.O.'s.
$Ron & Dave only.
Notes - The funkUs Five return to yet another funkUs Friday with many of The funki on hand to ring in another New Year. The vibe was most welcome after one of our longest breaks from playing, and the reception was akin to a homecoming... as is appropriate for Kitty's! Thanks, all! Really, all I can say is... thank goodness 2003 is over, which is a sentiment felt by many I spoke with. Here's to 2004, the year where change will be most welcome... for a change.
